Brink did all he could to hold off the a d va nces of McClella n d but fou nd that task too mu ch to hand le and allowed McClellan d to close in on fast sta r te r Forington. Bu t Foringto n held up u nd er pressure and sco red the wi n, followed by McClelland and Iowa 's Tim Sears, who got underneath Brink to na b third. McClellan d's two-class d ecima tion was fina lized after his wi n in the Open Pr o Tw in fi nal. It was nea rly 2 a .rn. wh en the class staged, but the spectators who d id stay that late witnessed some fast riding from the lead trio of McClelland (wh o cam e f ro m a row-three deficit), Snyder and Braunreiter. Schnabel , from West Bend, Wiscons in , ove rca me a mid pack start in th e Experts' 15-lap final to overtake Washin gton r id e rs Lo n ny Kopp a n d Eric Ri ckman as well a s Pr o-Sport Ke lly Larkin to take home $750 for his efforts . Geo rg ia's Gr eg Tysor ea rned a 600cc Pro -Sport win, riding a Hon d a CR500, an d he was joined in the winner's circle by Suz uki r ider Sh el d on Wenz , w ho was vic to rio us in the 250cc Pro-Sport class. The eve nt - a mu ch- welcomed sight after two days of stea dy ra in in the Black H ill s - kicked off the d irt track porti on of the 58th annua l Stu rgis Rally & Races week. In heat two , it took many tries to get the overe nthusiastic bunch organized, bu t once the race was under way, it would be a sneak preview of the class 's fina l. Oh io' s John Griffin took th e lead on a H ond a, but hi s impressive ride would be short-lived: He coasted to the si deli n es one lap later. This all owed Schnabel and Rickm an to battle for the wi n, w hich wo uld ultimatel y go to Rickman , ahead of Schnabel an d Kopp. Two 600cc Pro-Spo rt qualifier s we re also util ized to organize the con testants for a 12-rider fina l. Larkin proved that he was one of the handful of riders still awa ke by launchin g ou t in front of the Experts' 12-rider, 15-lap fin al , a nd he ce rta in ly wa sn 't i n tim ida te d b y th e man y Na tio nal-num bered rid ers in the field . Kopp trail ed Larkin on the opening-lap parade, followed by pole sitter Hiatt, Schnabel and Rickma n. Larkin put his Rotax into w hat was - considering the competition behind him - a nicesized lead, and then p ulled away from th e ba ttl e fo r second pla ce b etween Rickma n, Schna bel, Ko p p an d H iatt , w ho after a lap began a gra d ua l slide backward thro ugh the ranks. Larki n's im pressive perform ance, thou gh, wo uld end in the late r stages as, pressured by the trio of riders led by Schnabel, Larkin bobbled. This allowed Schnabel to sweep past the Colorado Sp rings rid er to gra b the lead.
