stand s full to capacity, local rider s showed what
they had at the Okanogan Memorial Half Mile a t
the Okanogan Cou n ty Fair gr ounds. Th is rac e
was held in memory of Officer Michael W. Marshall, who was slain in the line of d u ty earlier
th is year. Many peo ple sho w ed up to rai se
money for the fallen officer's fam ily while also
getting the chance to wa tch motorcycles race on
this cus hion hall mile for the first time.
Local motocross sta r Kevin Corne tt, fro m
Okanoga n, tried di rt track for his first time on
h is YZ250 Yam aha, which was mou nt ed wit h
Goodyear dirt~tr a ck tires . Co rnet t ca ug h t o n
quic kly and won the 250cc Novice class, and he
imp ressed the crow d by winning the whecHe
contest as well.
In the 600cc Novice class, ano ther local rider,
Steve Schardt from Twisp, show ed the fast way
a ro und on his SOOcc Honda. He wo n both his
heat races as well as the main e ven t. And he
wasn' t thr ou gh yet.
Scha rd t returned to race the 600cc Pro-Am
class as wel l. and won his heat race. In heat race
numbe r two, another local favorite > Jim Monega n. also of Twisp , aboard an ultra-fast Rotax ~
show ed that he hadthe speed to win , too, taking
the checkered flag in first place.
Sch ardt wanted reve nge in th e final. The
showdo wn was se t, with Monegan on the po le
and Schardt next to him . The two riders got off
the line one-two, with Monegan gelling the edge
at the end of the first lap. They battled the enti re
race, with Monega n win ning by a couple of bike
lengths.

75 0 a n d proceeded to win the Vin tage Tw in
class.
In the 600cc Expert class, several a tiona l·
number riders showed up to support this benefit
race. In the final, it was Jeff Annen ed ging out

Wood s, ridin g with the number--one plat e, cer·
tainly d id his number justice as he blasted to
do uble moto victories to captu re the 80cc Intermed ia te overalL
All the 80s raced together, so Woods charged
out in front of Beginner Tayl or Gilmo re and
No vice Michael Pa rke r to start race one. As
Woods roared around the big sweeper, Par ker
swooped pa st Gilmo re a nd se t ou t in pu rsuit.
Erik Hodges, joshua Dav is and /lryan Wu lfenstein, mea nw hile, were in J tight du el for fourth,
Woods slas hed an d flas hed arou nd the cou rse,
givi ng eve ryone a clinic on how to ride an 80 a t
speed. Parker was the only one able to keep him
in sight, as Wood s ended up k'pping thr ee-quar ters of the field by the time he sailed across the
finish line . Park er a nd Gilmore wo uld claim second and third, respectively.
Race two was a carbon copy of race one, with
Wood s, Gilmore a nd Parker lead ing the pa ck,
and Par ker making the quick move for seco nd .
