On a blisterin gly hot d ay in Perri s, California,
Mike Matt eI br aved th e brut al clima te to scold
the competition. The Yamaha YZ·mounted MatteI turned up the heat even mor e after pos ting a
PI tally for the overa ll victo ry in the Ov er Th e
Hill Ga ng Over 38 Beginner class at Perri s Raceway .
MatteI had some very stiff com petition in the
likes of Felipe Cue to and Craig Martin . The two
rid ers ga ve it their all as they ca m~ from behind
to challenge Matt ei in both mot os.
Mota o ne sa w Matt e! launch o ut of the ga te
on his YZ to grab the holesho t, with Bill Bouman,
KX-mounted Bryon Patterson•.Martin and Dennis "Ironma.n" Rosenburg givi ng chase . Rosen burg was racin g for the second time in the same
day, having raced. at Ca rlsbad earlier tha t morning. The posse of riders atta cked the track a nd , at
the conclusion of lap one, the running order was
Martel, Bouman, Rosenburg, Cue to and Martin.
Mattei began to stre tch out a comfortable
lead, as the battl e for seco nd continued. Cue to
ha d his ~\4 sing ing as he qui ckly cu t through
the field in pursuit of Martin. By midmoto, Mattel had esta b lished a large lead , but lap by lap
Cueto chipped away at MatteI' s cushion. Mea nwhil e, a th ree-w ay ba ttl e for thi rd invo lving

McMill er had d evel oped. McM ill er , who ha d
gotten off th e gate rather slowly, was har d on
the gas an d slic ing through the field until she
wa s br eathing down Martin 's ba ck . Wit h two
laps to go, Cue to had amazi ng ly bridged the
large gap a nd wa s all over Martel. Matt ei felt the
heat and turned up the wick . Lappers became a
factor, as Cue to was blocked by two backrnark ers, w hich allowed Ma ttei to escape a nd take the
c hecke rs. C ue to to ok seco nd , wi t h Bouman
.hanging on for third .
For mot a two, the start wou ld be crucial, as
th e track was sho rte ned for night raci ng. Th e
short, tight and fast track was d ifficu lt to pass
o n. but one mis ta ke and you wou ld be passed .
Mattel timed the ga te perfectly, as he an d his YZ
were first to the tum. Mattei liked his pr evious
strdtegy and beg an to quickly check out. Cuet o
had a next·to-last start, and his chances for the
overall appeared very slim . Ma rtin found him· .
self in seco nd , and Patt erson in third . Cueto was
rid ing like a man posses~, as he knew he had
to act quickly. an d he sto rmed toward the fron t
of the pack. McMiller hopped on Cue to'. wh eel
a nd foll owed him to the front. Cu e to se t hi s
sights on Patt erson, tak ing third; then he passed
Martin for second .
Late in the mot a , Mattei was cruising comfo rta b ly a nd. ag ai n, lapp er s slowed C u et o.
McMiller began to a pply pressu re to Martin for
the third position . Th e hvo rid ers wou ld d ice it
ou t for the remainder of the moto, wi th Martin
holding on to third.
Mean while. u p fron t. Matt ei wo uld take the
w ell-earn ed victory for the day, with Cueto finishing in seco nd , go ing 2-2 Martin an d Bouman
we re tied in points for third overall on the da y;
Ma rtin secured the ho nors by post in g a bet te r
finish in the seco nd mot o.

Kealama kia returned to shoot his Cedar Race-way-backed KX60 into the 60cc Novice moto lead
for a lap before Brad Masters made the pass . Masters wo uld continue on for the wi n over Kealama kia, Justin Mulford and Jonat han Arana .
Mu lford led most of the secon d moto before
d rop p ing ou t wi th problems. Masters in heritea
the lead and the ove rall win with his 1~ 1 rid eS.
Keal am a kia cha rg ed from his nea r- la st -pl ace
start to take home the . econd-place trophy with
another runner-up finish. Chad G OfL"S went 5-3
to beat Aran a' s 4-4 for th ird ove rall.
C.T. Falk won four straight mot es for overall
wins in the O ver 30 and Over 35 Novice classes.
A nthon y Rose fin is he d second to Fal k in th e
Over 30 class and was th ird ovcrall behind
Louie Peick in the Over 35 races.
