. passing Pi ch on, Dubach a nd Hughes,

stick. Way back, Ward was all alone in
fourth, while, after a spirited rid e, Emig
had fought h is way into fift h . Hug hes
held six th, Dubach seventh, and laRocco eig h th.

held his gro und a nd claimed the mo to.
A few seconds la ter Al ber tyn crossed
the finish lin e in third .
"Second was g ood, because I had
come from way back," said Lusk o f the
la te-mote duel between Henry and himself. "Howe ver, the last couple laps I
th o u gh t I had s o m e good lin es and
could have made the pass on Henry, but
I m ad e a ·li ttle mi s take goi ng through
the w hoops on the las t lap and couldn't
mak e the pass. I was kind of disa p poin ted w it h it, but ( rode well a nd Doug
rode well. It was a good rrioto."
"I wo uld ha ve liked to ha ve finished
two places a head," Albertyn said. "The
pace was so fast, a nd w e were already
setting the track on fi re . I was rea ll y
ha p py w ith my Su zuki, bec ause it was
going w ell. I was se tti ng Lusk .u P for the
end, bunt di dn't quite work ou t like I
planned ."

rolled beneath th e c h ec ke re d flag in
fou r th, Emig in fifth , Hugh es in sixth,
and laRocco, who had za p pe d Dubach
in the very last comer, wa s seven th.
It was Henrv who led the 40-rid er
field up the Washougal sta rt hill and out
of the first comer to begin moto number
tw o. As the pack roared ou t towa rd the '
fa r end of the circuit and up the first of
the m an y o mi nous Wa shougal hill s ,
Emig snaked hi s way by th e Yama ha
rid er a nd int o the lead . Nipping at the
Yam aha 's b lu e fender were Lusk ,
Pich on, War d , Hug hes , Su zuki of Japan
rider Ky le Lewis, and Albertyn.
For the next few laps, the front of the
field would rid e a ro u nd in a tight formation u ntil Ward bailed off hard in the
Briefl
far back section of the course, kn ock ing
himself unconscious (see ..Briefly.:"). At
abou t the sa me time, Albe rtyn fou nd a
way around Lewis a nd looked ahead for
Hughes. At the halfway ma rk, the field
fell int o a p rocessio n where no thing
would shake loose until la'p nine, w he n
Lusk pulled a deft move by taking the
inside line away fro m Henry in a ho rseshoe tum, thus taking possession of second . Pich on , smelling blood, also moved
in on Henry, shadowi.ng him for two
laps before fad ing back. If Pichon could
have m ade a pass stick, Lusk would
h av e taken the overall win. Fo r all
intents and purposes, the Henry I Pichon
conflict would be the final act of d rama
in the moto. When the w hite flag was
w aved at Emig, he ha d a 15-second lead
on Lusk - a lead which he wo uld keep to
the end . Henry rolled in ni ne seconds
adrift of the Honda to take th ird , and
with it his third National win of the season . Pi chon was a dis ta nt and lonely
fourth , with Albertyn fifth , Hughes
six th , Lew is s e v e n t h , Smail e ighth ,
Canadian [ean-Sebastien Roy ninth, and
Jeff Demen t 10th.

As a result of a broken leg suffe red during a practi ce sess ion at Washou-
gal. Team Yamaha's Ke vin Windham will most likely be out of action for
the rest of the season. With hIS leg propped up on a table in the Yamaha
pits . Windham said. "lt's a broke tibia. I did it in practice. and the break
happened in the lower part of the leg. It's a clean break and happened
when I landed off one of the tabletop jumps. I landed with my feet on the
pegs but somehow my foot got sucked under and I felt a weird twist.-
Sixteen-year-old Chris Gosselaar. the son of Team Honda mechanic
Mike GosseJaar. made his professional debut at Washougal. Riding Steve
Lamson's works Honda. Gosselaar was supported by longtime Hondaaffiliated mechanic Danny Bently. Gosselaar placed second m his qualifi er
on Saturday and pulled the holeshot in the first 125cc moto on Sunday
before running off the track. Nonetheless , it was a great effort by the
yo ung rider.
Larry Ward took a 'trip to the hospital Sunday afternoon following a
nasty tumble in the sec ond rnot o. Un conscious for a number of minut es,
W ard' $ fall was a major so urce of co ncern in the Suzuk i camp . " Larry was
out for a while.- said team manager Roger DeCoster. "Iwas really afraid
he broke his neck at first. However. they got him to the hospital. and he is
able to move everything. although I think he has a couple of broken ri bs.·
As of Monday. August 3. the latest word on Ward is that he is banged up
pretty badlybut is otherwise ingood condition.
