Banta , aboard his GSC-tuned Yama ha VZf.IOO, was flying high and was the only ride r clea ring the gra ndstand triples - whic h allowed him to close the gap that Jaegers was gaini ng on the rest of the co urse . By lap four, Jaegers was s ti ll lead in g b u t had Bant a almost on h is exhaust. Fina lly, Ban ta made a move for the lead in the co mer followin g the trip les. Then the two riders tangled, wit h Banta nearl y going down. This allowed McCoy, who had moved up a slot, to slide int o second. Banta quickly recovered from the mishap and took off after the leaders. Banta managed to pass McCoy, but Jaegers, with the pressure now lifted. was lon g gone. In the end it was Jaegers. Banta, McCoy and Gladding. The moto-two start was a carbo n copy of the firs t race . However, Ban ta d ecid ed to quickly d ispatch of Jaege rs, lea p in g ove r him on the gra ndstand triples. McCoy and Tommy Jean follow ed . a dis tant third and fourt h. jeegers wasn't about to settle for second and he gl ued hi mself to Banta's rear fender. Whe n the pair closed in on the com er p receding the tr iples, Jaegers dr ove across the come r, still staying in second , but robbin g Banta of a chan ce to build th e speed nece s sary to clea r all three jumps . -I knew he (Jaegers) was n 't doi ng t he triples," Banta said afte r the race. "I jus t played it safe." Lap after lap . Jaegers used this techniq ue to th wa rt Banta 's trip le-jump ing adva ntage. However. on the last lap . Jaegers p ulled a sw itch hit and, as Banta loo ked for hi m on the inside, he ra iled the outside in a las t-di tch effort to take the lead . He pinned the th rot tle and cleared alI th ree jumps . Un fortu na tely, Jaege rs carried a little too much speed going in to the fol1owing co rner an d crashed. McCo y repeat ed h is th ird -p lace moto-one finish, whi le Tomm y Jean, one of sev er al riders who had trave led fro m Nevada to defend the Silver State , finish ed a respectable second. The Ya ma ha sp eeds te r garnered d ou b le mo ta sweeps of the Open and Four-Stroke classes, bu t had his hands full in the Woods class. In the first Woods rnoto, Ho nd a-mounted Co rey Tread way p ushed his CR250 into the lead and ne ver succ u mbed to the challe nges of Sto ne burner o r YZl 25· mo u nted Jacob Morning star. Ston eburner absconded with the holeshot in the second mota, tho ugh , with Morningstar , Yamahe-moun ted David Diehl and Treadway in tow . They would fini sh in that o rd er a fter a hardfou ght ba ttl e, with Stoneburner winni ng the overall by virtue of his 2· ) moto finishes. In the 250cc C Class the largest class of the nigh t' s program - KX pilot Barry Ta ylor, who managed to ovoid a first-tum pileup, cruised to double mota vi cto ries , lead ing a Kawasak i sweep of the lop three places .
