The Billy Gallros/Pete Essaff Grand Prix rig sliced its w ay through the field, cha rging from a sev enthro w grid pos ition in to fourth place. As the laps Clfunh'd down, the team of Ga1lros and Essaff moved forward and began a ra ce-lon g ba ttle for the lead with th e Dillman / Stagliano team. with the Ga1Iros/Essaff outfit winning out, The race for third between the Mur ray/ Belletto team and the j. Dailey / A. Dailey team was very tight, with the former managing to d raft by the latter to take the final podium spot by jus t inches at the line. PA, JUNE 'lJ Rick Winsett cam e back from a brief med ically ind uced layoff to once aga in capture wins in two classes • the 600cc Pro and Spo rtsman - as Tra ilWay Speedway finall y managedto get a race in a fter a weather-in duced ra in-out two weeks ea rlier. After battling Winsett in the 600cc Pro final, Do n Mu ll en lef t th e trac k w ith a very hardfought win in the 250cc A division, and Phil Libha rt took the 750cc A final. After falling on the opening lap of the 250cc A fina l, jake johnson came back to win the 600cc A final. while ji m Hollister once again topped th e Over 30 race. Tun Russell node to victo ry in the Ove r 40 class , an d Dave Smith aced the 500cc Tw o-valve competition. Several riders con tinu ed their class domination in the Min i classes . Evan Baer easily took the 50cc Oil-Inje ted main a nd th e 50cc (4-6) race, c while John Lewis co n tin ued to ro ll in the 65cc main. For the first tim e in a wh ile, Chris Kline-fe lter worked har d for his W in in the l 25cc B class. jeff Ha ldem an traded the SOcc (7-8) lead seve ra l times wi th Brandon Robinso n before taking the win In tha class. whil e Evan Beer 's bro ther Shawn took. the H5cc-cL1SS Win. Up front. Mullen was lookin g for a major upset as he held off wtnsett's constant pressure for more than three laps . Winse ll slipped under h im as th ey ca me 0(( the second tu rn on the fourth lap. Mullen then ba ttle with Ubhart for d second , holding hi m off for most of the race until libhart I'1\4:Sd e an outside pa ss down the back straight on the final lap for seco nd place. Mullen led ano ther tig ht bac k a t the sta rt of the 250cc A final; th is lime. Bob Sweeten an d jim Haa s tra iled . Mu llen and Sweeten pulled a few lengths in fro nt of Haas in th ei r hea ted battle for the lead. Rich Mellinger moved up to pressure Haas for thi rd du ring th e m iddle laps. fmally taking the spo t on the se ven th lap . This time, youthful enthusiasm won over experience, as Mull en took . two-bike-le ngth win. In the Ove r 30 fina l, jim Hollister, we aring a Su pe rman jersey, grabbed a large lead over Bill Brom le y, Sweete n a nd Ivan Carl. Several times Bromley and Sweeten were side by side. wi th Swee ten unable to complete the pass. He finally gol the d rive on the sev enth lap to clear Bromley an d then cut in to Hollister 's lead. b ut there were not eno ugh laps left for Sweeten to se rious ly cha llenge Hollister. O n the se con d la p , h ow e ve r, Swee ten and johnson bro ke free of the others as Da vi s slipped to fo u rth. Wi th lit tle traffic in fr on t, johnson, who is ver y fas t, took th e lead fro m Sweeten at the end of the third go- aro und, wi th Davis taking third on the fourth lap.
