draft so long tha t I thought I tou ched his

stay in there as long as I could, to ge t a

DuQuoin," Ca rr said : "I reall y struggled
ea rly on , but the track came to me, At
thi s tr a ck , when it ' s loose d own th e
straightaway, it' s hard to pull out and
go by so mebod y. Aft er I moved to the
bottom, my lap times dropped pretty
dramatically thro ughou t the main event.

"We d id pretty good the last half of
th e race , but just got a real bad sta rt,"
Kopp said. " Early, I was ru nn ing high in
one and two and it was a struggle. 1 was
rea lly fas t through three a nd fou r and
was making u p time , bu t I'd lose it all
back in o ne and two. When 1 sa w tha t
narro w groove co mi ng o n, I dro pped
do wn on it. I was runn ing a lo t be tter
the last half of the race, bu t by the time I
got by Roed er a nd those guys, the lead
pack was half a lap ahead."

and Sta nlev round ed o ut the finishers .
Coo lbeth, Schna be l and Beattie all failed
to finish.
" It wa s a ma jor eng ine fai lu re th is
tim e," Beattie sa id. "Two week s in a
row, but this tim e it's really major ."
"I d ug the footpeg in to the g ro u nd
and it sp un around . Afte r the third lap I
d id n't have a nyplace to put my foo t,"
Schna bel said . "I found a place to put it
and sta rted to catch back up, but it was
aw kwa rd and 1 fell back off the pa ce. I
fell out of the draft and figured I might
as well pu ll off . I kn ew with 20 rid er s
out there, the last thr ee would all o nly
get o ne point anyway. We've made the
last three main s an d I' ve only picked up
four points total."

Coolbe th's race ended with a shock
failure on lap 19 after he had worked his
way up to 13th, ri g h t o n tea mmate
Kopp's rear wh eel.

Darkness was rapidly approachi ng as
the Sportsters took to the tra ck for th eir
pra cti ce and heat races . Three heats
we re used to par e the 29 en tries down to
the 17-rider National.
Series points leader Jess Roeder captured the first heat over Scott Stump and
Billy Martin. Th e seco nd heat belonged
to Shaun Russell, ahead of Mike Ha cker
and Paul Bergstrom. Th e last heat saw
Dave Camlin top Willi e McCo y and
Brian Krornroy.
The 17 riders hurried to the line for
th eir 12-lap main . Roeder w as in th e
bi gg est hurry off th e li ne, a nd he led
Stump, McCoy and Camlin into the first
turn . Ro ed er lo oked to ha ve thing s
under control, with McCoy, Stump, Russell, Ca m lin and Hacker in a tight for mation.
Th ey reeled in Roeder , with McCoy
in front on lap four. Th at lead was sho rtIived , h ow ev er, as b oth Roed er and
Ca mli n slam m ed by th e Te xan . At th e .
halfw ay point, Russell moved into third
a nd, wit h four laps rem ain ing, Cam lin
too k the lead .

which he held until the last turn of the
last lap. Roeder captu red his third win of
the yea r, with Camli n a close second.
McCoy was also within stri king d istan ce
bu t was forced to settle for third . Russell
ended up fourth, as Stu mp repassed Billy
Ma rtin o n th e last lap fo r fifth . Brian
Krornroy, AI Eadie, James Hart and Greg
Teague rounded out the top 10.
Ha cker, Ryan Brown, Brian Thomas
and John Oark wer e the rest of the finish ers. Paul Bergstrom, Bob Buffingt on

Mar last year , and I worked all winter on trying
to help it. but It seems everything I've don e
has just made rt worse . That was the best
motorcycle I've ever had. That mo torcy cle is
capable o f geltlng things do ne. It' s as fast as
any motorcycle on that race track , jf I co uld
just ride it like I was suppose d to. "
