Simo nsen to post a wi n in the 20-lap Expert main even t at the AMA PrO-Am qua rter-mile short track, which dou bled as the single-round Oregon State Cham pio nship at the Madras Speedway. The eve n t, pr om oted by the Moun t St. Helen s Mot orcycle Club a nd Dou g O'Brien, dr ew riders from three Western sta tes, but it w as Washin gtonian s includ ing 600cc Pro -Sport wi n ner Beau N (Above) Jeff Annen (40) won the Expert main event at the Oregon State Dirt Track Championships, held at the Madras Speedway In Oregon. (Right) Kurt Hawk won the 250cc and Open A mains at the Oregon State Dirt Track Championships. A. Brown - posting the majority of the class wins. Qualifying kicked off Oregon' s only AMA Pro dirt track race of the 1998 season, with Wood-Rotax-mounted Annen, Or egon's Brown and Eric Rickm an bat tling for front-ro w positions in the first of two heat races, which Annen won . Heat two wa s also closel y con tested as Eli Price, comin g off a Cas tle Rock IT win, and Simonsen traded positions in a racelong battle which Price ultimately wo n. Tw o six- ri der (the top th ree from eac h heat race) Dash For Cash events we re held pri or to the ru nnin g of main events. Brown, wh o won the first of two 600cc Pro-Sport h ea t races, did a runaw a y to nab a w in a hea d of Aa r o n Weston . Simonsen scored a popular win in the Cecil Brown-spon sored Exp ert Dash For Cash, but he was pre ssured by fell ow N at ional numbers Annen a nd Price. Yamaha rid er Dan Kirk led the two row , 1Q-ride r Over 40 final, followed by Alle n Morinville, B-main win ner Ji m Monegan and Mark Studebaker Sr., but Kir k began a slide backwa rd th rou gh the fiel d as bot h Mo negan a nd Morinville overtook him . Vince Ho lt, th e AMA District 27 Over 40 nu mber one, then ba ttled with Kirk to the end, resu lting in a finish-li ne pass to net Holt third behind Monegan and Mori nville. Kirk, Studebake r, Crai g Renfro a nd Kim McKillop closed ou t the field . Brown took the holeshot in the 600cc Pro-Sport final, and mu ch like' his hea t and DFC victories, his win was a ru naway ab oard the Ray Ca rroll Racing Rotax. Aaron Weston, who was making his season d ebut, poste d an impressive performance that netted him second ahea d of thi s year's winni nge st rid er , Tod d Hagm ann, who was followed by Geo r ge Prind iville, Moneg an, Brian Schilt and Doug Ann en. The final main eve nt of the eve ning was the 20-lap Expert m ain eve n t, in w hic h Annen sa t on th e pole po sition aboard the Lopko / Sho ei/Tho r-backed Rot ax. Anne n used the outside line to lead Simo nse n, Price, Brown, Rickman a nd Hiatt on th e o pe ni ng lap. Pric e' s cha rge forward ende d pr ematurely on lap one after he slid ou t. This allowed vete ra ns Simonse n and Ann en to leave the field well behind but opened up the d oor for seco nd-year Exp ert Brown to move into third . Brown , however , lost the position to Rickman but eve n tually m o ved back to th ir d af ter Simo nsen developed a flat rear tire and d ropped back. That left Annen with a healthy lead - one that he held to the finish. Gene Ritchie and his crew had the track in top condition all week end long, even w it h t he hot temp eratures an d hi gh winds. These are great condi tions for the beach , bu t fo r the clay of Red Bud, it s pelled ou t a lot of wo rk for Tim Ritchie's water tru cks.
