EVENTS Voss on top at Jordan SX By George and Karen Hod kinson JORDAN, M JUNE 5 N, Heath Voss of Prio r Lake, Minnesota, was the winner of the Pro class a t the ina ugu ral race of the 1998 Budweiser Su pe rcross Seri es, held at th e Scott Co u n ty Fairgrounds . Voss won the li on' s s ha re o f th e $ 1000 Pro purse, which became 51100 due to a last-minute addi tion by cr Communications of Minneapolis. .. After hosting th ree races at the facili ty in 1997, promoter Lee Theis put together a fiverace series for 1998 which has attracted a host of spo nso rs, including Budweiser and many more. For th e successfu l racers, there is contingency money up for grabs from Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suz u ki, a nd a slew of aftermarket companies. Approximately ISO racers and nearl y 1000 specta tors came out to the fairgrounds to enjoy a great night of racing. . A usua l favorite of the crowd, the jump contest, was won by Mike Kann of Oronoco. The 17year-old racer did a do ub le-legged can-ca n over the finish-line triple and immediately we nt into a nose wheelie. As Kan n jumped off the bike, it land ed perfecUy upsi de d ow n on the top of the ha ndlebars a nd seat. As the handlebars and sea t touched the ground with the wheels in the air , the crowd erupted and Kann was crowned king of the jump contest. Racers had to qua lify to make it into main events . In the Pro class, longtime Pro ra cer Cory Keeney, ou t of Oakdale, took the win and won the battle in the qualifying heat as Voss had a mish ap toward the end of the race . injuring an ankle whil e chasing Keeney. Voss had to sit out the ju m p co ntes t (wh ich he won last yea r) to . stay healthy for the main event. At the start of the Pro main even t, it was Voss all the way as he never looked back, takin g the win on his Great Lakes Airlines /Factory Conn ection /Larsons' Cycle-backed CR25O. [amey Grosser went through the first turn and over the first do ubl e jump in se cond place on his Hit ch in g Post/ Acerbis-backed VZl2S, but he went off the course and lost the position to the lone 500cc rider, Scott Steinle. Keen ey had a medi ocre start and wo rked his way thro ugh the field , but by the end of the first lap Voss had already put five second. on the field . Kann ra n third, followed by Mike Luoma , Cory Hu ppe rt and Steinle, who slipped to sixth. ·The next couple of laps saw Keeney close the gap, only to have Voss reopen the ga p on laps four through eight. Voss took the win with a 15second lead ove r Keeney in second . with Kann, Luom a, Steinle, Huppert, Matt O ma nn a nd Tim Posp isil closing out the top eight. Results 54 MICR O MIN I 50: 1.
