McEntee wasted little time twisting the throttle on his Southland Cycles-sponsored RM, pro pell ing his bike into the lead . McEntee then managed to put a little d ista nce between himse lf and the field. A batt le for third ensued between Piattoni and YZF400F-mounted Alle n. The battle was short-live as Allen spun out not once but d twice in th e moto o n the extre mely sli p pe ry track. Allen did manage to salvage fourth in the moto. Mea nwhile, u p fron t, McEntee look ed over his shoulder and saw the hard-charging KX of Sanchlrico dosing in. The two battled fiercely for the remaind er of the moto, swapping paint and plastic. The riders, who are friends, were loving every block-passing minute of it. With two laps to go, Sanchirico took th e lead from McEntee with an aggressive block-pas s in a hairpin turn . As th e tw o rid ers a p p roa ch ed th e white flag. McEntee turned up the wick and the pass for the lead ov er the step-do w n tabletop . Sanchi rico tried to retaliate over the doubl e, but McEntee took his line away and Sanchirico settled for second. Piatton i fin ished third. Sanchirico gra bbed the holeshot aga in in the second moto as Todd Broussard, Piattoni, McEntee and Stephen Watso n gave chase. " I n e w Mc En te e w ould b e co m ing," Sanchirico said. "We bo th wan ted badly to bea t each other, so I went as hard as I could to esta blish a big lead. " McEntee mad e qu ick wor k of both Piattoni a nd Brou ssard as he held th e throttl e ope n to claim secon d in hot pu rsu it of the leade r. Halfway through the m oto, McEntee began to fade . "I could see him charging hard , and then he was n' t ther e," Sanchirico exp lain ed . "I had the speed a nd was ridi ng well, but with all the rain th is year, I'm not used to the heat and I hit the wall, too." McEntee was forced to pull off the track, too ex h a us te d to ca rry o n. Sanchirico to ok th e chec kers first and ea rned the overall vic tory. JUNE 6 Zeb Armstron g went 1-2 under the Los Angeles Cou nty Racew ay lights to earn the 250cc intermed iate-class w in du rin g Ca lifornia Racing Club's Burger King-sponsor ed round of Saturday Night Motocross. Armstrong mad e taki ng the first- mo te wi n look almos t easy as he took the holeshot aboard his O'Neal /Holley Racin g-ba cked YZ250 and never looked back. Ch ris Tocco got aro und Robbie Dunham and was able to close to withi n a few seconds of Armstrong before his YZ400 F started ma kin g fu nny noises on th e fina l lap. No rberto DeBernardi put a last -lap pass on Dunham for third, with Kris Biomd ahl coming back from a first-lap fall for fifth. Dunha m quic kly opened up a thr ee-second • lead on Armstrong and DeBernardi when the gate dropped in round two. By lap two, Dunham had his hands full with Arms tro ng and Debernardi. DeBerna rdi mana ged to pu sh Armstrong back to third, only to have Armstrong return the favor a few turns later. This went on for a couple of laps, just off the back fender of Dunham. Dunham took the wh ite flag with DeBernardi in his shad ow. When Dunham bobbled in the whoops, DeBernardi shot into the lead . DeBernardi's lead was shortlived, how ever, as he messed up in a comer, and Dunham was right there to take advantage of it. Arms trong also slipped past DeBernardi when he bobbled, and with half a lap remaining he pressured Dunham all the way to the checkers . Dunham's 4-1 topped the 3-3 of DeBernardi for the second-place troph y. DeBernardi returned to pick up th e 125cc Intermediate first-mote win after trailing George La Monte up until the last lap. Eric Anderson held off Bobby Hall for th ird . The second moto was a wire-to-wire romp for De Be rna rd i e n rou te to the class victory. Anderso n a nd La Mon te mix ed it up pretty good over the runner~up position, with Anderson prevailing this time out to earn second overall. Results P/W BEG : 1. G regor y Da hn (Lt>m l; 2.
