" "(Below) Off-roader Ty Davis showed up and won the ' . Th e Yama ha /Yamalube-spo nso red event was a tw o-day, four- moto eve nt that d rew more than 400 Vet-class racers. PACE Th under Bike Cha mpion Spud Wa lters and Na tiona l H a re & H ound Cha mpion / off-reade r extraordinaire Ty Davis provid ed Du ba ch w ith so me stiff competition on the weekend , as did fellow YZF400F rider Sco tt Myers . White Brothers /Shoei-sponsored Walters rode well to finish second in the Pro Industry Dash, while Racers Edge/ Ap plied / Whi te Bro the rs- backed Myers took ru n ner-u p hono rs in the OTHG Pro class and fourth in the Pro Ind u s try Dash. Montclair Yamaha /FMF/Oakley-supported Davis had h is C urtis Sparks-b uilt YZF400F .dialed as he grabbed the Motowest-sponsored holeshot pri zes in all eight of his motos en route to an overall victory in the Junior Vet Support class, as w ell as a third overall in the Pro Ind ustry Dash. A fte r th e racin g was finis hed, the excitement con tinued as Yamaha donated a yet-to-be-released 1999 YZ125. The bi ke wa s ra ffled off, with all proceeds going to the Feed The Children Fu nd . More than $4000 was raised for a grea t cause, and Val Fukunaga was the w inner of the 1999 YZ . Moto one in the OTHG Pro class sa w th e CRSOO piloted by Will ie Musgrave rocket up the hill wi th the holeshot w ith Ed McCoy, Du ba ch and Myers in tow . Dubach quickly worke d his w ay onto Musgrave's re a r w heel a nd bega n to pr essure him for th e lead. The lon g, fas t track w orked to the CRSO s advantage O' as it w as noticeably faste r up the ultrafast uphill. Musgrav e did all he could to th wart the relentless attack of Dubach, but it was in vai n as Dubach flew pa st the CRSOO down the "freeway" prior to th e finish lin e. Dubach took th e checkers, with Musgrave and Myers in tow. Moto tw o was more of the same, but this time it was Myers who' w orked his way in to the p icture . M XA /White Brothers- sponsored Mus grave a ga in grabbed the holeshot, w ith Dubach and D Myers gi vi ng chase. Dubach g ra bbed the lea d by la p three and led it to the checkers. Myers worked his way around Musgrav e and gave chase for the lead . Th e battle for fourth was extremely tight as the trio of Ray Somma, KX-mounted Ron Gilbe rt and Kelly Andris mixed it up. Gilbert went d own in the bac k sec- . tion, allowing Andris to secure the fifth position. At th e checkers the order was Dubach, Myer s, Musgrave and American Honda's Somma. By the third mota on day two, Yamaha / Enzo /BSY-backed Dubach had the track d ialed. Myers, however, tired of seeing Dub ach's back fend er , ripped off a sweet hol esh ot and ma na ged to pu t some dis tance on th e Doctor, who wa s w orking up from fourth . Myers wa s rid ing extreme ly fast, which inspired Dubach to wick up his thumper even further . In the end, Dubach w as able to pass My ers and tak e the victory. In the final mota, Musgrave again grabbed the early lead . Th en My ers took his turn up front, but in the end neith er could hold back the 35-yea r-old Dubach, w ho is s h o w ing no s ig ns of slo w ing down. Myers finis hed second , and Musgrave held off the la te-mota cha rg e of And ris to snag third . The in vite-o nly Pro Ind u stry Dash p itted several to p ri d er s against one ano the r for th eir respective compan ies' br aggin g rights. Yama ha was re presented by Dubach and W alters; FM F sen t Dav is a nd off-road s pecia list Donnie Boo k; and Applied Racing wa s w ell-represented by Myer s. All of the boys w ere rid in g YZ400Fs. • As th e g ate fell in th e first m ota , Davis and Dubach went elbow to elbow u p th e w id e-open uphill start, ne ith er givi ng an inch nor showing any sign of letting off. Davi s too k th e lea d to th e first turn, which wa s ve ry im p ressive co ns id eri ng he co u ld n ' t ge t h is b ik e started one minute prior to the drop of th e ga te. The off-roa d s p eci a list and king of th e desert d id a valiant job of dicing with Dubach and Wa lte rs, but in th e end th e m ot ocro ss sp ecia lists w er e too much for him. In th e second m ot o, Davis h ad the lea d ha lfw ay th rou gh th e mo ta as Dubach d es p era tel y tried to take it fro m him . The tw o came down the freeway simu lta neo usly and ca me to g e t h er in th e co rn e r, with Dubach k nocking Davis in to the so f t shou lder. Th is also allowed Walters to ge t by . "I had to ge t by; Walters wa s press u r ing m e," Du b a ch s a id . " I wis h I could have mad e it by clea nl y, but tha t's raci ng ." "That was kin d of dirty; h e d id n' t have to hit m e," Davis resorted . "The re are two mo tos left." Duba ch cla imed th e vic to ry ove r Wa lt ers, and Da vis r eco vered to take th ird . Da vis use d th e "bump" to m otivate him and he tried d esp erately to defea t Dub a ch in t he thi r d m o to . Da vis grabbe d the lead and immediate ly tried to check out, bu ildi ng a co mfor ta ble lead over Walters , Myers and Dubach back in fourth. Wa lte rs p icked up the pace and held off the attacks of Du bach, who wor ke d his wa y around Myers . Walter s was ripp ing up the loa my te rrain and riding smoo thly when su ddenly he fle w off th e tra ck w hen a rock jammed his bra ke pe dal. Tha t allowed Dubach to clai m seco nd and set out after Davis. The battle th at ens ue d p roved to be one of the bes t of the event. Dubach w as o n th e m ove and fi na ll y m a d e h is "clean" pass on Da vi s by sq uari ng off the turn after the stee p do w nhill. It wa s an incre dible move. Meanwhile, Walt ers remounted the track in fourth and put o n a n a mazi ng charg e to p a ss b oth Myers and Davis on the last lap to claim second . Davis ended up third . In the fi n a l m ota , W alters found som e extra sp eed and pulled out a lead o v e r Dub a ch . Lookin g to kee p hi s unbeaten wi nni ng streak alive fo r the w eek end, Dubach charged fr om m id pack . So meho w Dubach looked to be going fas te r after racing seven m otos, and he caught and pa ssed Walters without letting off the gas . Dubach fini shed th e weeke nd undefeated, taking home the lion' s share of the Pro purse. " I ha d a lo t of fun raci ng w ith the Ov er The Hill Gan g; th ey put on a topca libe r event," Dubach sa id. "My YZF wa s ru nning gre at. It's the fastest bike I have ever ridden at Mammoth ." In the Amateu r Industry Dash , it w as Cryo-Labs- backed Dusty Walters taking the top h o no rs . Wa lt ers' C R2S0 was lig h tn in g-fas t as he took three o u t of four holesh ots and mo ta victories.
