Survival at Second Creek Road Race By Kurt v~n Ah nen DEIIlVER. CO /UNE 14 . Bad weather and a rou gh tra ck su rface provided spil ls for the riders and thrills for the fans, wh ile Jos h Graham landed his seco nd consecu tive win in the Race of the Rockies at the fifth round of t he MRA Road Ra ce Serie s . he ld at Second Creek. It started out with a bang a s the flag was thrown and the top racers in the reg ion flew into a wet tu rn one. Ra in had co m e a n d go n e throughout the day, fostering a false sense of security amo ng the riders. YZF100D-mounted Dan Tu rner had the lead going in to turn one, with Gra ha m ju st to his ou tside on his rear w heel. Ricky Orla ndo, who is rumo red to be goi ng to Lag u n a Seca to ri d e in th e Wo rld Su perbike class, came in on the inside of Turne r. The incid ent was lab eled as " rac ing" but left Tu rner tumbling and scra ping on the pav em ent. The fans were on their feet, many expecting a red flag. Orlando wa s in the lead as Graham followed in ho t p ursuit for the first half of the event aro und the 1.75-mile. paved " jeep trail. " Ryan Burke enjoyed a fanta stic ride at his home track. running a smooth third, whi le Doug Vickery ran a distant fou rth. Bobby Miasek, the first of the middleweigh t riders, rod e a stead y fifth place. T he odd sight was Ryan a nd Dennie Burk e, who were separated on the track - the y usually seem to ride one-two. At the beginning of the event, Dennie Burke was as far back as 11th, but he managed to wor k his way up to a stro ng seventh. During the 16-lap even t, the wea the r cleared conside rabl y and it was up to the riders to de termine how far th ey could wick it up. The already tech nica l layout of the circuit, co mbi ned with the rough finish and pavement transitions, made for eventful view ing as bikes ' caree ned off the edge of the track in tum one and in the " Rat's Nest" (a 18lJ.degree, first-gear, left-hand ed tu m , apexed through a concrete patch). However, the MRA safe ty crew kep t up their high standa rds, and the y kep t the racing line relatively safe . r Neari ng the second half o f the race, the speeds p icked up and G raha m wa s pr es surin g O rla ndo fo r th e lead . The front b rakes we re bei ng used wi th pr ecisio n as the fans were distr a ct e d by th e cha tte ri ng sound of the re ar w heels hopping over the bumps. Graha m made a successful pa ss and made it stick by p laci ng tap p e rs be tw een himself a n d Orla ndo. Ryan Bu rke p rov ided ample en te rta inme n t in turn one as he also followed th e leaders wi th close pass ing. stand ing the lappe rs up in the tum. In th e end . it was G ra ha m ta kin g the win ove r Orlando, and it wa s Dan Turner wit h the new track record for the day. 0- Chromeslip-ons nailabl. for all '98 BUlllI. including Ihis 5-3 Thunderbo/l Slip-ons lind full systflms in aluminum. carbon fiber, ceramic and chrome avai lable for othflr popul ar sport bilc.s; D&D owner, David Rash has been building, dyno testing aruLrac ing the best 4-stroke exhausts you can buy for over 25 years.
