Stewart, Goodman hot at RRR Hillclimb By Bud Northrup Photo by Mark Lew is 48 POLO, IL JUNE i , The Rock River Riders held their first hillcl imb 01 1998 on their 140-loot hill. The club added a new br eaker a t th e 6O-loot level, ad d ing a bit m orc of a cha llenge to the al ready ro u gh and steep hill. Brent Stewart from Ga lva, Illinois, was the fastest in the amateu r por tion of th e program, blasting over the top in 3.245 seconds on his Jackson Per fonnance KTM38O. Stewart's extra ordinary. rid e ca me in seco nd~ rou nd action in th e 400cc class. He need ed it to overtake Paul Hackbarth, who had ca rd ed a fine 3.72o-se cond run on a VZ400Fborrowed from Marc Stamm and was the class leader at intermission. Iowan Jerome Beckley put his VZ40QF over in 3.%2 seconds; he was the only other rider in the class to break the lour __- ond mark. Mike Millan:l and Josh Hovey, both riding YZ400Fs, finished lourth and fifth. The last time was Stewart's first in 1998, but it probably won't be his last- he claimed three in 1997. Stewart came clos e to a d ouble win as he tu rned a fine 3.790 seconds on his Jackson Perlonnance Yamaha on his first ride in the 250cc class, only to see Indianapolis rider Mark Goodma n Jr. slip under him an d take the lead with an even faster 3.782-second run. In second -rou nd action, Stewart stopped the clocks in 3.564 seconds to take a momenta ry le a d , but you ng Goodman met hi s ch a llenge wi th a blazin g 3.551-second run on his KX2SO to ed ge Stewart by only sev en-thousa nd ths 01 a seco nd for th e class win. Kev in Cappello was the o nly ot her rider in the class to break int o the threes wi th a 3.915-5econd run on his KX250. Good ma n also claim ed the 200cc-class win with a good 4.395-secon d run on hi s KX125, overtaking Becky Williams, who took the class lead into th e br eak with a good 4.701-second rid e on h er KX125 . Gle n n Fuegen pu t h is KDX200 over in 4.846 seconds for thi rd place, with his budd y Jerom e Beckley close behin d him on his KDX in 4.886 seconds . Fred Tom s, also KDX-mountcd, rounded ou t the top five with a 5.219-second run. The North rup br others, Jason an d Kalc b, rod e thr ee bikes in th ree classes a nd claimed all three win s. Getting to the climb late d ue to their p lane's late arri val on their return from Hawa ii, the Northrups we re given only one rid e in each class, bu t they mad e the most of them. [aso n was first to go and rode his Spo rtland CRSOO in the 600cc class, flyin g over the top in 3.268 seco nds to take the class win. As soon as he finis hed his 600cc ride , Jason brought his ToOcc "Ho ndasaki" triple to the line with its center cylinde r smoking and launc hed it over the breaker. The mid d le cylinder blew as he touched down from his jump, but his mo mentum was such that he still flew over the top in a class-win nin g 3.486 seco nds . Kaleb Northrup learned from his T:>Occ ride , in which he finished second alter a big wheelie, and delivered a near-perfect run on his Triumph in the Pushrod class to take the win in 3283 seconds.
