Durelle wins Cambridge
Short Track

Semi-retired Pro dirt tracker Davey Durelle sped
to victory during the 2G-Iap Open Pro main event
when the Dirt Track Riders Association hosted the
opening round of the 199B AMA/District 23 Rat
Track racing season. The races were held at the
Isanti County Fairgrounds quarter-mile dirt oval.
The defendihg and two-time Pikes Peak Hillclimb champion came out of retirement to finetune his 600cc KTM in ecca law of Sacramento and lauren WallSce
of Salinas began a rivalry in the Pee Wee class
and in the newly formed Powde.r Puff class that
saw them do battle in four different races on
both the short track and IT courses at the season-opening event at the Lodi Cycle Bowl. Two
weekends of rain-outs had the Lodi regulars
aching to slide.
Law aced the holeshot both times on the
short track in the Pee Wee Stock C (Over 7) and
Powder Puff classes and led for several laps
before being reeled in and passed on the back
.straight by Wallace on her flying Suzuki. Back
for revenge on the IT course, Law blasted off
the line with and rode to a wire-ta-wire victory
in the Pee Wee class on her Yamaha. The pair
returned next in the IT Powder Puff division,
but this time it was Wallace who was first to the
corner, with Law hot on he.r back fender. The
pair raced through the tree turn, with law setting up a nice pass from the inside on the highbanked turn. Wallace would close on the
straightaways, but law was quicker through the
infield. At the checkered flag, it was law with
the win by five bike lengths.
A fierce battle in the Open B short-track
main event erupted between Billy Hiles and
Mickey lane. Hiles took the lead with a gutsy
holeshot, then led for roughly half the race
aboard his speedy Yamaha. lane played it cool
and smooth, eroding the lead away lap after lap
before sneaking by Hiles for the lead.
Despite a nasty heat-race get-off with Billy
Martin, Rob Damron combined a superior
power-to-weight ratio on his L&R Husaberg
with his awesome racing ability to overtake
Jamie AgWlar's early lead in the Open A shorttrack main event. After Aguilar was displaced to
second, national number 38, Steve Mayfield,
