The bike still ran okay, though, because
I won the third test without it."
At the end of the third special test,
riders were routed back to town, where
they were given a 15-mlnute work period before they had to reimpound their
bike for the next day.
Sunday's course ran ill the opposite
direction of Sa turday's, with a few sections thrown out and a few sections
,rerouted to shorten the day-two mileage
to 115 miles. Some riders were concerned tha t the du b wou Id run the
course through Saturday's gnarfed first
special test in the oppo ite direction, but
club officials were quick to throw out
the muddy ection that had been overrun by deep ruts and mud bogs the day
before.
"We try to make our event as close to
the Six Days as possible," said Boise
Ridge Riders' Bob Bosserman. "This
winter has 'been the wettest winter m the
history of the event, and the ground saturation right now is over 90 percent. I
couldn't believe it. Some places that are
usually solid grounq are mud bogs
now."
Day two started out at a much more
leisurely pace than day one as riders
cruised through the streets of Idal10 Gty
for two miles before reaching the first
route cl1eck. The first special test of the
day and the fourth of the event lay just a
short aistance on the other side of the
checkpoint. Once again, Davis started
out the day trong by winning his third
special test by a margin of three seconds
over Abbott. Garral1an was 10 seconds
off Davis' time with a score of 553, and
Book extended his class lead with 570.
Piggot was once again the man to beat
in the 125cc class, with a fifth-overall
test score of 576.
"Sunday my times got better, but 1
did not feel like I was riding better,"
said Piggot. '1 felt like 1 was geared too
tall, and I had to abuse my clutcl1 a little
bit. 1 got fifth overall for test four on my
125, so 1 was pretty stoked."
Before riders could get back on a

comfortable trail pace, they ~ere sittffig
on the starting line of test five - the grass
track from day one but run m the opposite direction. Abbott gained crucial seconds on Davis when the KX250 rider
scored his second test wm of the weekend. Abbott's time of 330 aced out
Davis' time by three seconds. Raines
found himself back at tlle top of a test
with 336, eight seconds ahead of Garrahan and Brown, who both had carded a
344 to tie for fourth. Book opened up his
lead even more when he bested Marshall 345 to 347. Dalmers also carded a
347 in test five. DuCray and Russell
Pearson tied for the 125cc honors, also
with 347.
The sixth and final pecial test of the
event was just 70 miles mto Sunday's
schedule, and it was by far the fastest.
"The last test was awesome," said
Piggot, who admitted having problems
in the test bu t still had fun. "You never
shut off in that test - just pinned it all the
way."
Abbott agreed.
"I felt real good m the last test," he
said. "It suited my riding style becau e
it was kind of wide open and the trail
was so nice and loamy."
Once again, Abbott was the victor,
earnmg the honors for Sunday's competition. Abbott roosted through the test
with a score of 928 to Garrahan's ·second-place time of 935. Brown stayed
consistent once agaill, with 936, followed by Davis' 940. Book carded a 942
to round out the top five m the terram
test. Russ Pearson smoked the 125cc
class with a time of 949. His closest competition in class was Ron Schmelzle,
who had broken down on Saturday and
reimpounded to ride Sunday for points.
Schmelzle was 16 seconds off of Pearson's pace.

last test unscathed. Kawasaki-mounted
Luca Trussardi, who had been dominatmg the Lightweight 250cc Four-Stroke
class all weekend, fell victffil to a broken
motor halfway through test six.
Even though all the special tests were
completed by mile 80 of Sunday's route,
competitors still had 35 miles of trail to
complete to reach the finish. Book had
the class win m the bag until a high·
speed get-off ruined his cllances of a fffiish.
"Everything was going great but
after the last test, 1 crashed and knocked
my elf illy," said Book. "I wa just
messing around and I hit sometllffig at
speed and just went down."
ick Pearson stayed with Book until
he was able to ride back to the pits and
call it a day. Pearson, however, still
made up enough time in the remaming
miles to not lose any route points for the
weekend. Book's misfortune handed the
class win over to Marshall.
By the time riders had completed 115
miles on Sunday, their test times were
ready to be posted.
"We had to ride for a long time
today, so 1 bumped up a few minutes
today and just trail. rode with Destry,"
said Davis. "We were just trail riding
and screwing around, which made it
funner than riding by yourself. I ju t
tried to ride smooth and keep up my
lead m tile tests."
Abbott picked up a notcll on Sunday
but was still not able to make up for a
few bad test times on Saturday. He bested Garrahan by 28.seconds on Sunday,
but it was still not enough to take second place from the KTM rider. Fourth
went to Dal1ners, witll a two-day total of
3521. Dahners never released the
Heavyweight Four-Stroke lead all weekend. Brown rounded out the top five,
cardmg a 3554 and beating the re t of
the competition trying for a spot on tile
U.s. Junior Team.
First 125 went to DuCray, who fm·
ished m seventh overall with a score of
3620 ahead of class competitors Zimmerman and Piggot, who turned in twoday times of 3634 and 3657.
