sixth. I didn't want to lose those points
to Steve (Crevier). I knew I couldn't
draft and pass him before the finish line,
so I knew I had to lead. [ was trying to
keep him behind me the whole lap. I
wasn't sure if Steve felt confident. I
didn't know what he had. I didn't know
if he was going to go for a draft-pass
move or if he wanted to be in front of
me. r thought I might be doing all this
weaving and all this stupid stuff for no
rea on.
"He wanted to get in front of me in
Canada Comer - the two Canadians, eh,
we fought for third place, eh. He dove
and just went a little wide. We were side
by side and I pushed him a bit, not literally, and he went wide and I dove inside
going into the [a t corner. It was tight
and Steve rode a hell of a race."
Chandler, meanwhile, was able to
put a little gap on Yates in the closing
laps, leading by .95 of a econd to start
the final lap. By then, Yates had given
up the chase. The difference in riding
styles between the two was distinct.
Chandler was immaculately smooth,
Yates a bit more sloppy as he slid the
GSX-R600 into and out of every corner.
'1t feels good," Chandler said of his
victory. "The last [a p I kinda' wasn't
sure. I wanted to be safe but I felt Aaron
(Yates) was too close to really back it off
too much. I was thinking, 1 gotta finish,
I gotta finish.' I was thinking about it
(the Road Atlanta crash) for sure. II I
wa to repeat that this week, I'd really
have felt bad."
"On the warmup lap, the front
brake was feeling a little funny," Yates
explained. "It wa real tight and then
when it'd release, l'd get some slack in
it. I thought it was sticking. I got my
mechanic out there but we couldn't do
anything about it, so I was pretty
, ticked off there a bit at the start. But it
either got hot and released or something and it didn't drag too bad. I just
happened to be in the right place at
the start and I went around. the outside of four or five guys in turn one.
That put me right up there behind the
top four and r just hung in there with
'em.
"When Doug got up in front, I knew
he was fixin' to check out," Yates added.
"lI I want to go, I'd better go. I went
after Doug.-] was there and hung with
Doug for a few laps, but he got to
pulling away. r started watching my gap
back to Miguel and just making sure he
couldn't get in the draft, then I just rode
it to the end."
