Cornoyer, Carpenter claim Broome-Tioga Motocross By Jim sanderson BINGHAMTON, NY, MAY 16 jim Cornoyer and Paul Carpenter took the overall wins in their respective classes with 1·1 fin· ishes at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center. A great day of racing was had by all, under sunny skies and with excellent track conditions. Rider turnout topped 200, with riders racing in 23 classes. Carl Snyder snagged the holeshot in the first moto of the l2Scc Novice class, with Cornoyer, Cj. Talarski, Neil Flint and Tom Lees in tow as the pack went into the jump-infested supercross section. When the pack blasted out of the section, the top three remained the same, but Blake Ferrini and James Dean had taken over fourth and fifth. Dean soon went down, though, and Lees regained fifth. On lap two, the top four remained unchanged, while Fred Metzger moved up into fifth. Camoyer attempted ~veral passes on Snyder for the lead on lap three, but Snyder managed to hold him off even after Comoyer got out of shape on the big downhill straight near the start area. When the top five came into the back section of the track, Cornoyer had the lead, Snyder had dropped to second, Talarski held third, Ferrini maintained fourth and Metzger was fifth. And that's how moto one went into the books at the checkers. Moto two began with C moyer getting the holeshot, but TaJarski quickly blew by him over the tunnel jump to take the lead. Dave 8rocavich, Snyder and Shawn Wyman rounded out the top five as the pack went into the front supercross section of the racecourse. When the pack came into the back section of the course, it was Comoyer out front, with Snyder, Brocavich, Metzger and Lindsa y Cron in tow. On the second lap, Cornoyer had a Iline-second lead, followed by Snyder, Brocavich and Metzger, with Ferrini taking fifth from Cron. At the dinner table, Metzger and Ferrini got by Brocavich to take third and fourth, dropping Brocavich back to filth. The top five remained ti,e same for the rest of the moto, with Comoyer taking the over~ all. Carpenter took his usual holeshot in the first l2Scc Expert moto, followed by Scott Rockwell, Mike Wilcox, Jason Gattari and Aaron Dieter. At the halfway mark of lap one, Dieter got by Gattari for fourth. On the final lap, Carpenter was gone with a 16-second lead, Wilcox finally got by Rockwell for second, Dieter remained in fourth and Gattari took fifth. The second mota was an instant replay of the first, with Carpenter out front and Rockwell, Wilcox, Gattari and Dieter in tow. On lap two, Dieter got by Gattari for fourth, and on the last lap Wilcox got by Rockwell for second. Carpenter sweeps again at Hurricane Hills Motocross By Bill Canaguier CLIFFORD, PA, MAY 31 Pnul Carpenter once again swept the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at Hurricane Hills MX Park in round three of the Thor/Parts Unlimited ortheast Classic Motocross Series. Carpenter's only mistake occurred in the first mota of the 125cc Expert class, when he seemed to ha ve gotten cross-ru tted a few turns before the finish line, which gave Pro rider Barry Carsten an opportunity to slip past Carpenter. The remainder of the motos in both the 125 and 250cc action belonged to Carpenter, as he Jed the packs from starl to finish. Carsten kept him honest, though, leaving only a bike length or two between them, waiting for that moment to pass, But it didn't .happen, and Carpenter kept his cool and his throttle wide open, denying Carsten any chance to squeak by. In the 60cc (7-11) class, it was Mitch Dougherty who dominated the fujI gate of competitors, displaying Llearly flawless riding skills. After a bad start in the first mota, Dougherty found himseU midpack halfway through the first lap. With only three laps to catch the leaders, he began picking off the competition. Midway through the last lap, Dougherty had just two riders to overtake to gain the lead. A slick inside move against third~place finisher Ryan O'Laughlin and a fearless jump over a 30-foot tabletop jump to pass second-place finisher Jay Weller put Dougherty in the lead to take the_ motowin. . • Dougherty took the holeshot in the second moto, and from there he pulled a commanding 10-second lead over the second-place ride of Weller for back-ta-back moto wins. Prieto pounces at Moroso Road Race By Lisa Theobald WEST PALM BEACH, Fl.,MAY25 Florida Custom Glass/Blais Cycles/EFX Graphics~supported Shane Prieto won his eighth straight Shootout at the CCS Florida Region road races, held at the Moroso Motorsports Park. Chuck Graves and Jamie Bowman came out to try to knock him off the winner's block, but Prieto was up to the challenge, and not even Graves nor Mike Luke could beat him on their brand-new Yamaha R1s. Prieto came prepared with a new bike, too, as he brought a new Blais Racing-built ZX9 to battie. And even after crashing his new machine in the GTI class, Prieto was still able to hold off the competition on his backup bike and match Henry DeGouw's record of eight Shootout wins in a row. Now only one win away from matching the track record set by Donald jacks and two away from setting a new track record, Prieto is fast on his way to being crowned "Mr. Moreso." After an aborted start in the GTl class due to a crash in turn two, Graves jumped out to an early lead on the restart as the riders charged down the back straight. Prieto slipped unde.rneath Graves as they came through turn five and dragged his footpeg on the ground, knock- ing his bike out of gear. This unexpected action caused him to go wide and stand the bike up, and Graves sUd underneath him for the lead, When Ron Howard lost the front end, his spinning bike made contact with Prieto, putting them both out of the race. With two of the top contenders crashing out of the race, the battle was left to Graves and Luke, and Luke was hot on Graves' tail as they continued around the course. Luke passed Graves in the front straight and the two contin~ ued to swap positions for the rest of the race. Graves was able to keep the lead as he crossed the start/finish line, with Lu.ke dose behind in second. During the $1000 Shootout, Prieto took U>e holes hot again, and just behind him Bowman and Graves rode side by side as they scrambled for the lead. The first lap ended with Prieto leading Craves over the start/finish liJ1e, while Howard worked his way up to third plac~ and Luke was closing in behind him. Prieto stretched his advantage to about 15 bike lengths ahead of Graves, but Graves slowly began to close the gap on the race leader. When Howard pulled out of the race with mechanical troubles, Luke moved up to chase Graves. When the white flag flew, the space between Prieto and Graves had dosed to about five bike lengths, but Prieto had enough of a cushion to stay in front, Pri.eto charged down the front straight with his head tucked under the wind screen to claim his eighU1 Moroso Shootout victorv.
