ROAD RACE AMAlAfBNA SUPERBIKE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Round 8: Road America For almost half of the race, only a second or so separated the top six riders as the fast 4-mile circuit again produced close racing in front of an announced crowd of 35,000 spectators. It was superbike action at its best, with the likes of Gobert, DuHamel and Bostrom mixing it up with Muzzy Kawasaki's Doug Chandler, Yoshimura Suzuki's Aaron Yates and Yamaha's Jamie Hacking. It was Gobert, DuHamel and Bostrom doing all the leading, however, and the race came down to those three as the pace got quicker in the closing stages. In similar fashion to the two thrillers at Road Atlanta, it was the pair of Hondas vs. the lone Vance & Hines Ducati. Again, the pace was hot, with all three riders clicking off their fastest laps of the race on the final go-around. Bostrom's final lap was the quickest - a 2:10.947 but he'd lost too much ground the previous lap when balked by a backmarker. It all came down to just Gobert and . DuHamel. Ironically, Gobert's pass on the French Canadian came in Canada Corner. From there, DuHamel could only hope for the perfect drive out of the final corner and a draft pass at the finish line. He almost pulled it off. As the pair crested the hill, Gooert led but DuHamel pulled out of the draft and crossed the finish line side by side with the Duca ti - a red blur a nd too close to call. It was Gobert by just .022 of (left) Vance & Hines Ducati's Anthony Gobert (95) leads American Honda's Miguel DuHamel (17), Ben Bostrom (11) and the rest at the start of the Superbike race. (Belo)'V) This was the story at Road America: Gobert leads a shadow DuHamel and Bostrom In another thrilling Superbike race, the trio battling all the way to the end. Gobert hung on to win by just .022 of a second over DuHamel. By Paul Carruthers Photos by Henny Ray Abrams ELKHART LAKE, WI, JUNE 14 et's see: Road Australia, Road Italy, Road Canada... Maybe it's ·time to change the name of Road America. After all, an American hasn't won at the picturesque race track in America's dairyland since Doug Polen won here in 1993. Since then the race has featured nothing but winners from foreign lands, and today was no different as Australian import Anthony Gobert and his Vance & Hines Ducati managed to hold off American Honda's Miguel DuHamel and Ben Bostrom in an absolutely thrilling Superbike National. Margin of victory: .022 of a second, or about the wid th of a really skinny tire. It's difficult not to sound repetitive when describing Uris recent run of AMA Superbike ationals, as each new one seems to ou tdo the last in terms of excitement. "The best AMA Superbike race ever" seem to be the c'atchphrase of the year and it would be hard·to argue abo!J.t this one not being placed right at the top of the list.
