fifth. ayes led Souza, Pearce, Castro, Mitchell and Kemp to the finish of the first professional motorcycle race on the PAS half mile. Aztec Racing's Herrera and Martin, on the Skip Fordyce bike, raced into turn one, where Martin shut the door on Herrera to lead the 883 main. While the two National stars battled at the front, Puente Hills Motorsport's Norm Francis led Reuben Malaguarnero, Erie Wood and Wayne Warrington around the banked oval. Martin's setup was better than Herrera's, and he looked smooth out front while Herrera pushed and slid his way around the track, gaining and pulling alongside but not quite able to . pass. As the two leaders started lapping traffic, Francis pulled away from the ba ttle between Malaguarnero and Wood, with Wood gettins the fourth spot. Malaguarnero was followed by Warrington, Freddie Orosco and Mike Boyle. What started out as a 750cc Vintage race turned into an exhibition class as Martin was allowed to dust off an old Bartels' XR750 - and he dusted the field to lead from the green light. John Lundgren, Gary Davis and Tom Horton folilowed. Jeff Johnson slid up the inside to < snag third from a slow start, passing under Lundgren to lead the real vintage bikes. While Martin and Johnson pulled away, Rick Reed and Eddie Mulder were charging through the field to take fourth and fifth from DaviS and Horton. Reed and Mulder were side by side through the comers, Reed finally gettj.ng the drive onto the back straight and taking fourth from Mulder. Martin continued to lead, but Jeff Johnson, on the Fontana Radiator Triumph, was slowly gaining. Reed was also gaining on Lundgren, but too few laps remained for either to catch up. Martin led Johnson across the stripe for the finish, followed by Lundgren, Reed, Mulder, Davis and Horton. There were five National numbers gridded for the main in what looked like a 600cc National from days gone by. Pauley put his Bullet Racing/Turbo Blue Wood-Rotax barely out ahead of Mayfield, Simonsen al,d Herrera. The tight group was joined by a charging Martin, who fell in behind Mayfield to set the pace for the night. Iwanaga stuffed inside Herrera, working the low line and using it to pass Simonsen for fourth. Mayfield could run his Arai/White Brothers Wood-Rotax up on the tail of the leader, but Pauley's drive out of the corner was too good. Geramy Rackley was making up for a poor start, flying aroud Kevin Bricker and Herrera to slide into the sixth spot, but too late in the race to catch the top five. Pauley held on to win, with Mayfield second and Martin taking the last podium spot. lwanaga, Simonsen, Rackley, Herrera and Bricker followed to the finish. {~ 9:30pm est.
