If you do know who he is, bether from his regular stories and monthly lumn in Cycle World or from his monthly echnical column in eN's sister publication, ersonal Watercraft Illustrated, then you probaIy know he likely could tell you precisely ow many lumens are required. But as the title suggests, the book is about aking your sportbike perform, not meeting HA requirements. If OSHA could make our bike work better, it would be included. Everything is here - all the major systems, he physics involved with the basic function f each, and how to exploit what you have for t performance. The presentation and writg are excellent, with many technical drawgs and graphs by the author's own hand, as veil as numerous black-and-white photos. _ Cameron takes subjects that, without his epth of experience and writing talent, might therwise be impenetrable. And he explains it II - sometimes down to the molecule - often ·th entertaining and telling analogies (how any toasters' worth of heat oil-cllUrning ·ght add to oil temperature, for instance) hat give the reader not only a concrete derstanding of what Cameron is taLking bout, but a feel for the physical processes d characteristics involved. It is a credit to his writing ability that he an fit so much into 160 pages, especially conidering how thorough he is about each sysem in and of itself, as well as its role as part f the whole. As Cameron says, "Everything s painfully interrelated," and he always lain how and why, but witllOut the pain. he ultimate beauty of the presentation is that e doesn't treat his words as The Word, Iways reminding you to keep an open mind. n the end he preaches only one gospel: "Speed is truth." In the unlikely event that you would Like are information than what is included in his ext, there is a good appendix (one of three) vith recommended readings about machines nd riding techniques. The classic seminal exts are included. Number crunching with orne of the formulas in the "Performance I ath" appendix is worth a lot of entertainent, too. "You have to learn your bike's sympoms," he says, "either through bitter experice or from veterans." He's a veteran, who admits to having had lis share of bitter experiences. This is decades t experience, learning and thought, clearly, onoselyand entertainingly presented.
