MOTOCROSS AMA WESTERN FOUR· STROKE NATIONAL MOTOCROSS SERIES By Don Schneider ANDERSON, CA, MAY 24 ance Smail continued his winning ways in the AMA Western FourStroke National MX Series as the Husaberg rider romped to victory in both motos at the Shasta Motorsport Complex near Redding, California. Smail was certainly on top of his game, . as he lapped all but three riders in the first moto, the returned in moto two to do even better by lapping every rider on the track. Close racing it was not - at least for the lead. All the racing on this day was for second place on back, and it was Motoworld of El Cajon's Greg Schnell taking runner-up honors with a steady 2-3 tally. Finishing third overall was Clawson Motorsports/Powerhousebacked Rusty Holland (5-2), followed by Dustin Nelsoh (3-5) and Spud Walters L (4-7). 22 Wet and cool conditions kept track promoter Steve Schmitt and crew busy, as they managed to keep the Ron Crandall-designed supercross-style track in good shape for today's racing. In the first moto, Andy Anaya powered his Premier Motorsports Husaberg FC501 into the early lead over Walters, Smail, Scott Myers, Billy Binckley, Nathan Woods, Mike Larson, Gordon Ward, Nelson, Holland, Dean Matson and Schnell. Going down earlY was Woods, who came together with Smail. Woods veered off the 'track and was relega ted to the back of the 27-rider pack. Woods would .Round 2: Shasta Afotorsport Complex later crash again and eventually finish a disappointing 19th. After lap one, Smail motored around Walters, then Myers. Once into second, Smail was approximately five seconds behind leader Anaya, but that wouldn't last for long. By the end of lap two, the lead was Smail's. From there, Smail was in control. He quickly opened up a big lead and soon found himself approaching the tail end of the pack and starting to lap slower traffic. By the halfway point, Smail had lapped half the pack and was searching for more riders to pass. He nearly went down when he tangled briefly with another rider, but Smail held on and continued his blistering pace. When it was all over, Smail had lapped all but three riders, scoring his first win of the day. Elswhere on the track, Nelson w Ward and Downs. Finishing outside the top 10 was Naughton, who had stalled his bike's engine and couldn't· get it to refire. It finally did after about a minute and a half.
