TIFFIN, OH, APR. 19
The Sandusky Valley Riders MC hosted the
opening motocross race ofthe 1998 MRA racing
season, which traditionally kicks off after the
Pontiac SX every year. After a long winter of
wanting to ride and then watching the Supercross, everyone was pumped to g t out on the
track. Mother Nature spoiled what would have
been a perfect track and turned it into a quagmire as a light rain fell throughout th .. day.
Despite the conditions, more tha." 160 riders
took to the track to ride on opening day.
Brad Dixon sloshed his way to overall wins
in the combined Pro class and the 16-24 class to
record a perfect sweep of the m tos. The Canadian Kawasaki rider motored through the mud
with only a couple of minor mishaps. 111 moto
one of the 16-24 class, Dixon went down after
tangling with someone over the tabletop sections, but quickly remounted to charge through
the pack and take the win, over Jon Suman in
second and Neil Carlson in third.
Dixon took both Pro-class moto wins
despite pressure from Suzuki rider "Radn'"
Jason Foldesi. Foldesi led for a bit in moto one
on his 125cc machine but took a smaU spill,
which let Dixon by.. Chris Lowell took third
overall.
Barry M.ayo scored six moto wins on the
day, as the "Silver Fox" put his newly acquired
Yamaha YZ400F through a serious workout
around the hilly SVR circuit. Mayo glided to
victory, winning the Over 35, Over 40 and Over
45 classes. Tn the Over 35 class, Mayo won over
Anthony Gotts and Kevin Mousseau. Mayo
roosted in the Over 40 class over Bob Bollenbaugh and Phil Peyton, and he bested Eric Carlson and John "Stumpy" Wirick in the Over 4S
class.
The micros proved to be tough as a good
crop of SOcc bikes battled in the mud on an
abbreviated track that had been laid out for
them. Kyle McConnell continued his winning
ways by faking the win on his Cobra over with
Logan Gillen (KIM) and Allen jones (Lem).

The fun flies at Frankfort MX

FRANKFORT, OH, APR. 12
Easter Sunday's motocross at Frankfort's Old
Town PaIk turned out to be a star-studded
affair, with such notables in attendance as
Honda of Troy president Phil Alderton, 1980
Red Bud National winner Denny Swartz, and a
handful of National-level Pro racers ready to do
battle.
The Ove, 40 class saw a delightful first-moto'
duel between Swartz on his Yamaha and Alderton on Mike Brown's number 100 practice
machine. Alderton gained the early advantage
with some spirited riding, while Swartz played
catch-up. Local fast-old-guy Gerry Bennett spectated back in third as Swartz tried everything to
get around the H.O.T. boss. While Alderton flew
further on the jumps and seemed to be in tip-top
condition, the wily Swartz sneaked ar und on
the corners in different lines, searching for an
opening. Finally, with two laps to go, Swartz
made his move and Tan to the checkers, with
Alderton in close pursuit. Bennett finished a distant third in this field of 10 riders. Moto two was
all Swartz, as Alderton registered a DNF. Bennett took second, ahead of Honda-mounted
Kenny Reif.
The A classes witnessed intense battles
between two of. Ohio's hottest Pro riders, as
Honda-mounted Mark Burkhart went to war
against F&S Suzuki's Greg Rand. Rand, a sixtime National Amateur champ, is recently newsworthy for passing Ricky Carmichael at the indianapolis Supercross, and he looks to be on the
move for the big time again. The first moto of
the 12Scc A class saw Burkhart, Chuck Reed and
Rand jump out to form a three-man freight train,
with David Puckett in fourth and Lloyd Gregory
in fifth, Rand proved to have the drive as he
quickly worked his way lip front, wiU, Burkhart
in tow. Reed followed at a distance in third.
Though Burkhart would catch Rand in some
sections, Rand would pull a little distance in
others and he took the win, ahead of Burkhart in
second and Reed in third.
The second 125cc A moto was all Burkhart,
as Rand did not start. Following Burkhart to the
checkers was Reed, Erik Leonard, Ryan McHale
and David Puckett, in that OI:der.
While Burkhart won both motos of the 2SOcc
A class, he once again had to clash with the
rocket-fast Rand, who was apparently experiencing some discomfort.
"I really had a lot of arm pump out there,
but Mark's riding real good, so it makes it
even," said Rand after a rigorous first mote.
"1 just do my best out there and try to have
some fun," stated Burkhart as he nursed his sore
shoulder after coming off the track.
Summit Station, Ohio's Joshua Dohn was the
man to beat in the 2SOcc B and Over 25 A classes, as Il,e lanky lad went 2-1 in the 2SOs to win
and 1-1 for the Over 2S trophy.
Marietta's Mike "Blazin'" Blai.r was unstoppable in the Over 2S A division, where he
whipped his Suzuki of Greenville machine to
the win ahead of Denny Swartz and Dallas
Avery. Larry Shumaker was the Open B wUuler
80cc (12-16) and 250cc Novice-class wins, respectively, as the opening round of California 'Racing
Club's 21st annual Dunestown Series was kicked
off at Los Angeles County Raceway.
As the swarm of KX60s rounded the first
turn in moto one, it was Ritzier out front, followed by Da vid Medina, Garcia and Prestin
Lundin. Garcia got around Medina aiter a lap
but couldn't catch the fleeing Ritzier and had to
settle for second at the finish. Shawn Butler
overcame a midpack start to earn third, ahead of
Zachary Brown and Medina.
RitzIer led round two until a stop for a soil
sample on lap three dropped him way back.
Garcia was right there to take the lead and he
slowly pulled away from Medina to collect the
overall. Medina's 5-2 edged out Buller's 3-4 for
second overall.
YZ80-mounted Ryan Riess dominated the
first 80cc (12-16) moto, going wire to wire for the"
win. Miles Buck gated second'and kept Anthony
Barbacovi at bay the entire distance for the runner-up finish. Mike Epstein finished fourth,
ahead of jaime Dietz.
Riess got off to another good start in moto
two, ahead of Epstein and Barbacovi. Riess ran
out front for a couple of laps before going down
in the LACR sand and dropping to the back of
the field. Mjles had passed Barbacovi and
Epstein, and inherited the lead when Riess went
down. Miles controlled the second half of the
moto to sew llP the overall with 2-1 rides. Barbacovi went 3-2 for second, with Riess coming
back to earn third with a I -4 score.
.
The first 250cc Novice mota was all Tyler
Buck's, as he put his CEF-backed RM2SO into the
early lead and had a cleaf track all the way to
the checkers. Bryan Lamborn took second,
ahead of Mike Little, Scott Minster and Ethan
Dally.
Buck duplicated his outstanding first-moto
performance with a runaway second~moto win.
jason Simmons held down second place for haU
the moto before going down, and Little secured
second overall with 3-2 finishes. Lamborn came
up through the pack for third, with Brett Fo.'
going 6-4 for fourth overaJl.
