Steve Hatch (Suz) won the sixth round of the Grand National Cross Country Series in Elizabeth, West Virginia, on May 10. Second place went to Fred Andrews (Kaw), followed by Rodney Smith (Suz), Randy Hawkins (Yam) and Jim Jarrett (Kaw). Steve Hislop (Yam) and Terry Rymer (Suz) split wills in the fourth round of the British Superbike Championship, held at Snetterton in England on May 10. Hislop beat Niall Mackenzie (Yam) and Chris Walker (Kaw) to win the first race, with Rymer topping Walker and Hislop to win the second race. Mackenzie leads the championship over Hislop, 138-122, with eight rounds remaining in the series. Todd Harrington (Kaw), Toby Jorgensen (Hon), Michael Fitzpatrick (Kaw), Mark Junge (Suz), Bill Wacholder (Suz) and Billy Graef (H-D) emerged from the NASB World Cycle Fest with victories on May 10. The event, held at Elkhart Lake, Wiconsin's Road America, featured seven road racing classes and made up round two of the North American Sport Bike Series. Harrington won the series' premier class, EBC Brakes Sport Bike, topping Grant Lopez (Suz) and Mark Junge (Suz). Jorgensen won the Grand Prix Series by Idemitsu class; Fitzpatrick topped the Sunoco GT Series GTO class; Junge won the GTU class; Wacholder topped the GT Lights race; and Graef won both the HarleyDavidson Twin Sports and Buell Lightning Series races. mc Bart Bast (Jaw) scored a double victory at the Fast Fridays speedway season opener at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn, California, on May 8. Bast, the reigning Northern California Speedway Champion, survived a crash early in the night to win the Handicap main event oirer Billy Janniro (Jaw) and reigning U.s. National Champion Mike Faria (GM). In the Scratch main, Bast again finished ahead of Faria, with Jim Sisemore (Jaw) third. L & R Husabergs finished 1-2 during the second annual Big Valley Ford Spring Classic dirt track race at the Lodi Cycle Bowl in Lodi, California, on May 9. Kenny Noyes (Hbg) and Tony Souza (Hbg) occupied the top two spots in ihe 600c Pro Sport main event, with Bob Casey (W-R), finishing third. Brett Landes (Rtx) was the man to beat in the Expert ranks, topping J. P. Simonsen (Rtx) and Rex Fisher (W-R) in the main. Landes also won the lion's share of the purse in the $1500 Dash For Cash. Craig Connell (Due) has retained his lead in the Australian Superbike Championship after finishing second to Martin CraggiIl (Kaw) in the third round of the series in Winton, Victoria, Australia, on May 3. Scheduled to run over two 10lap races, the event was reduced to just one nine-lap race following a start-line accident that involved Paul Free and Kirk McCarthy, according to Cycle News correspondent Darryl Flack. The IMDA will have open pits at no additional charge for spectators as a test for the Labor Day running of both the Springfield Mile and the $50,000 Hall of Fame race. "We are refencing the Springfield paddock area to get our fans cJos.er to their heroes," IMDA executive director Denise Hartley said. "Springfield has always been known for the closest and fastest racing on the Grand National tour, but we are also fanfriendly and determined to give our customers the most possible value for their dollar."
