The trial was part of the extravaganza known as the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days West. Laid out in the grassy hillsides around the road race circuit, riders had a good-sized loop linking nine sections. . Derek Belvoir and Mike Fenner served as trial masters and gave the competitors a good mix of terrain, from steep off-eam.bers to a bit of mud to broken chunks of concrete and even a trip through a horse corral. Riding in his first-ever trial, Albert Butterfield topped the Modem Classic C class, dropping just five points along the way. Butterfield is a car-racing instructor a t Sears Point, and he thought he'd take a shot at riding trials. After takmg some impromptu instructions from Modem Classic B winner David Boyd- . tun, Butterfield was up to speed, and ryipped out the win over Gary Cochell (who had six points), the seven-point 'ride of Rich Dominguez and a tie for f?urth between Jerry Stoodley and Dar- E TolII'''' \:\lll 1,,1' II pl. r "\{ I I IHI«lIIIIH)lh.L'r jl,I,,,,\! { I 11'11' "....d lt· ..
