Brian Gibson pulled off the Michigan Grand
Prix win by the slimmest of margins by keeping
his head cool and his tires hot at the opening
round of Great Lakes Road Racing Association
(GLRRA) Road Racing Series, held at Grattan
Raceway.
At the start, it was Kevin Graham who bent
it in first, followed by Brian Gibson and Larry
Denning. Graham, a nine-year veteran from
Canada, was working with a new Rl Yamaha
with bad stock suspension that gave way on lap
two. This, however, did not stop him from holding off the duo of Gibson and Denning for the
next few laps. Gibson, showing a wheel to Gcaham at every tum, kept the pressure on Graham
and his flailing suspension. Denning was able to
stay in the batlle by drafting the two down the
straight.
Gibson and Graham swapped first place
over and over until the last lap. Graham, now in
first, missed a shilt at the end of Grattan's:JOOO.
foot straightaway. Gibson was only a few feet
behind him and kept a cool head, avoiding a
near disaster. Denning, a Kansas City native and
·a racer for 10 years, saw the gateway open and
he swept around the outside of the wide-eyed
rivals to take his seat at the head of the class. By
keeping his 4&b-prepared Kawasaki 600 as wide
as a school bus in the turns, it looked like Gibson
and Graham would be late for school by a second.
As the last tum was completed, it was Denning in the lead, with Gibson and then Graham
only a wheel a way. Horsepower and a good
last-tum drive sent the trio down the straight
toward the checkered flag. Gibson slipped past
Denning to take the finish by only three-hundredths of a second ahead of Denning and one
,bi.ke length ahead of Graham. This gave Dega
Racing-supported Gibson five wins and a third
for the weekend. Gibson picked up more than
$1500 and a set of new, soft Pirelli Tires.
The next round of the GLRRA series will be
held at Putnam Park, located in Indianapolis,
Indiana, May 9-10.
