Based on the high number of riders that turned out for each series race, Azevedo's decisions were obviously well-received. As the gate dropped for the 12Sec Pro race, it was Yamaha-mounted Danny Paladino snagging the holeshot. However, Paladino had Willoh, Rick Ryan and Brandes hot on his tail. By the end of lap one, Willoh and Brandes had made their way around Paladino, and the duo began to stretch out a comfortable lead. Brandes was on a tear, however, and soon left Willoh behind. In fact, Brandes was gaining nearly a second per lap over Willoh as the race progressed. Willoh never gave up, but he just couldn't mount a charge on j3randes during the entire 20-minuteplus-one-lap moto. Meanwhile, Jeff Pestana was working his way up through the pack after a mediocre start. The Yamaha pilot soon found himself in third place after four laps, but Willoh and the leader, Brandes, were already long gone. Also charging through the pack was Rusty Holland. Holland had also had a less-than-stellar start, but the Suzuki pilot never let up and slowly began reeling in Pestana. However, Holland had to get by the pack of riders fighting for fourth, made up of Aaron Cheselske, Ryan and Kawasaki-mounted Jeff Northrop. As the white flag came out, Brandes was cruising up front, with Willoh a ways back, followed by Pestana in third. Holland was still gaining ground on Pestana but ran out of time when the checkers came out and he had to settle for fourth. Northrop rounded out the field, taking a hard-fought fifth. "The track was pretty flat and not as rutted as 1 expected," Brandes said. "This track is a pleasant change from the tracks down south. 1 sprained my wrist about two weeks ago during practice and this is my first hard ride since." When asked about his recent switch from Team Stiffie to Team Moto XXX, Brandes said, "They (Team Stiffie) were kind of hard to deal with and things just didn't go real well. 1 feel much more comfortable with Team Moto XXX." The second-place finisher, Team Stiffie/Westwood/Tom Morgan racingbacked Willoh, was pleased with his rid "I still have supercross suspension on the bike, but 1 felt okay out there," Willoh said. "I want to thank my mechanic, Dustin Shanklin, for keeping the bike running good this season." The 250cc Pro race got under way with the same 2D-minute-plus-one-lap format in place. Things got really interesting as the holeshot honors went to Holland, followed by Brandes and Willoh. With three of the top guns out front, the crowd was anticipating a good race. As a matter of fact, Holland began to pull away from Brandes ever so slightly on the first lap. But before the first lap was in the books, Brandes had managed to make a clean inside pass on Holland on the back section of the track. Although Holland was showing excellent speed, the Fresno resident had trouble keeping pace with the speedy Bran6es. , Meanwhile, behind Holland, Willoh maintained a secure third as the laps wore on.
