Maxwell hammers SRA Grand Prix By Robert Van Damma SAN BERNARDINO, CA, APR. 12 Bob Maxwell came back ftom a poor start to win the Senior Expert class at the second round of the Southern Racing Association Grand Prix. held at Glen Helen Raceway. The 4-mile course was laid out so that the motocross course connected with the vintage course. Bruce McDougal took the holeshot, followed by Brian Renshaw and Steve Dalton. Maxwell started in last plaCe, but by the lime they got to north section df the Course he was in second. As the leaders came out of the vintage course, McDougal went down at the base of "Bud's Creek." That let Maxwell assume the lead, followed by Renshaw, Dalton, Alan Kent, Dennis Boulware and Pete Vetrano. Dalton was the first to slow up, as Kent and Boulware went by at the is-minute mark. McDougal was slowly getting back up to speed as he went by Vetrano. Maxwell had a scare on the fifth lap, when banners got caught up in his rear wheel. "I tried to pass some lappers by the finish line and went wide and got the banners wrapped in my wheel," Maxwell said. "Later in the race, my rear brake would not work." By then, Maxwell was leading by more than 30 seconds on Renshaw. Boulware moved past Kent on the back section, but they were both passed by Paul Vogelsang near the 3D-minute mark. McDougal then went by Kent and Boulware within the final two laps of the race. The IMS/Privateer Sportswear/Yamaha of RedJands·sponsored Maxwell took the win, followed by Renshaw, Vogelsang, McDougal, Boulware, Kent and Mike Altenhofel. (N Results 80 BEG: 1.
