(Righi) Jimmy Roberts (2V) eventually finished second to Jon Zshrt (partially hidden) at the Golden Bear Grand Prix, held at los Angeles County Raceway in Palmd8Je, Califomia. holeshot from the rest of the pack. Tucked in behind him were Berry, Mouser, Blair and jeff Flora. Sheldon was on the serious gas as the Suzuki rider blitzed around the technical track, with Berry in tow. Eventually, youth prevailed as Berry took the lead, the eventual win and the overall victory. Blair would take third behind Sheldon, with Mouser in fourth and Flora in fifth. Besides Berry, Cincinnati's j.e. Cravens was a triple class winner, as the "Hammerhead" won all four motos in the 125cc B and Open B classes, and went 1-2 for the overall in 250cc B. Galena's jason Copley went 4-1 for second overall in this field oJ 20 entries. Grove City's Richard Robinson simply ran off with the Over 30 class as the Honda-mounted racer jammed his red machine to both wins over the 2-2 finishes of Dale Taylor in this 24rider class. Larry "McGrath" Shumaker was unstoppable in the Over 40 class as the elderly speed demon slashed his CRSOO to two convincing moto wins in the field of seven old-timers. Results 50 P/W: 1. Zydinsky zaps field at Trail-Way Short Track By len and Ben Breech HANOVER, PA, APR. 11 joe Zydinsky greeted the first Trail-Way Speedway night race of tne season by topping the largest 250cc A dass in quite a while to take .his first Expert win over late-race leader Bob Sweeten. Despj te the second in the 250cc A class, Sweeten had another good outing, winning the Over 30 and 750cc classes. Also joining the double-class-winner club were jim Chapman in the 500cc A and Over 40 classes, Chris Klinefelter in the 125 and 12Sec Schoolboy divisions, and Evan Baer, who won the 50cc (4-6) class (for the third straight time) and the 50cc Oil-Injected group. After the 21-rider field had run three heats and a semi, jack Wagner jumped into the lead over Don Mullen, Sweeten and Zydinsky. Sweeten got second off the second turn on the second lap, and took first with an outside-line pass entering the first turn on lap six. On the next lap, Mullen and Zydinsky also got by Wagner as things really heated up. On the seventh lap. Zydinsky found a line that really worked as he got by Mullen and then Sweeten and just held on for the 'win. Taking full advantage of the typical eveningrace surface with multiple lines were the Pros. Phil Libhart, Kevin Varnes and Rick Winsett were quickest off the line and pulled several lengths on the rest. Varnes had his Rose Racing Rotax riding the high line as he got by Ubhart on the second lap. Ubhart and Winsett ran very closely for the remainder, with Libhart holding off the quick Winsett for second. Most of the same riders returned for the Sportsman final. This time, Winsett got the holeshot on his Mom and Dad/Phil Ubhartsponsored Rolax over Ubhart's Georgie Price and Varnes. Price put his KTM in second at the start of the second lap, with Varnes right on his rear. The two battled for second over the pext few laps, With Varnes' high line paying off about halfway. Varnes cut into Winsett's huge lead but ran out of laps before he could mount a serious threat. Bryan Douglas grabbed the 85cc lead from 20ch Calcutt, Shawn Baer and jason lsennoel<. By the third lap, 1sennoel< had used the outside line he had been using in the daylight races to get into second. Until the end of the race, !sennoel< stayed right on Douglas' rear tire, looking for a mistake that never eame. Dave Smith surprised many at the start of the 500cc A final by taking the lead from his buddy jim Chapman and Winsett. Smith held on to the lead for more than half the race until Chapman slipped under him as they entered the first turn on lap five. Smith stayed close in second, but Chapman maintained control to the end. Results 50 (4-6): 1. Evan Baer (Act); 2. John Long III (Act); J. Josh Davis (Cob); 4. Mik(; Wagner (A(;t); 5.
