red £lag. Both riders were unhurt. With no one to restart the race, the win went to Northrup and he was the final rider for the Scratch main. The richest race of the night, the Scratch main, was not without its own controversy. The draw had Ermolenko on the pole, with Oxley and Venegas in two and three. orthrup was in four and McConnell was on the far outside, in five. They staged, and Venegas went into the tapes. The penal ty was an au tomatic 00. Venegas argued his case and tried to enlist the help of the fans, but the referee stood firm, and Venegas retired to the pits. On the restart, Ermolenko showed he could m'ake the inside work. He went to the front of the pack, with McConnell second and Oxley third. McConnell dropped to fourth on the second lap, ith Oxley taking over second. On the hite-flag lap, Northrup ran into trouble in the first turn and took McConnell with him. The race was complete and the win went to Ermolenko, with Oxley second and McConnell third. McConnell argued that he had been interfered with early in the race by Ermolenko but the win tayed with Ermolenko. It was his first ever Scratch win at the venue. Two Mi sian Yamaha teams made it up the ladder to take their places in the Sidecar main. Mission riders Bill Matherson and Dale Leeder drew the pole, while Duane Carmont and Richard Tailing were in two. The other Mission squad of John Matherson and Scott Cole was in three, and Alan Hall and Dirk Votaw were in gate four. Matherson and Leeder broke on top, with Carmont and Tailing riding right with them. Matherson and Cole were third and, as they came out of four, it looked like a Mission Yamaha sandwich. Carmont and Tal1ing had to turn a little too sharply coming out of two on the second lap, and they ended up in the infield. Matherson and Leeder also took a little detour but re-entered the track and were now running behind Matherson and Cole, who would go on to win all the marbles in the quick four-Iapper. Hall and Votaw picked. up the show money. The Support main was highlighted by a great race between Randy Skinner and Gharlie Cooley. Both riders came from the long yardage, with Cooley working the dirt on the outside and taking the lead with two laps to go. Skinner was right behind him, went down low and was working the inside groove. When Cooley got a bit too wide, it was all Skinner needed, and on the whiteflag lap Skinner took over the front spot and brought it home. Cooley was second, with Rick Bishop rounding out the field in third. Bryan Thompson gave the fans an up-close and personal look as he layed tag with the front wall and ended up in the front-row seats. Luckily the bike stayed on the track. Joe Winston won the Support B main, topping Tim Reilly and Doug Lupo. f:i SX flOOR AlhOUlCER l MODEL LEEANNE TWEEDEN GREG ALBERTYN LARRY WARD MICKAEL PICHON fORMER SX CHANP MIKE BELL EDIIDR OF M01~CROSS AClIDl JODY WEISEL EDIIOR OF MOIOCROSS JOURlAl MIKE BROWN MIKE CRAIG CASEY LYTLE STEPHANE RONCADA JIMMY MAC FORMER NX CHANP , GARY JONES FORNER NAllDlAl RIDER CLARK JONES FDRNER5XWORlOCHANP ROSER DECOSTER ESPN2 PERSDlAlIlI • MIKE LAROCCO JERRY BERNARDO [VER IDlE IlO~S IEVO BEVO FORTE fORMER SX lNATIOUl CHANP ROBBIE REYNARD RYAN HUFFMAN DAVID BAILEY fORMER SX lNA1IDlAl RIDER GOAT BREKER ESPN PERSOlAlIli ART ECKMAN ESPN PERSOUlIlI t EOI10R OF RACER X DAVEY COOMBS ESPN PERSOllllll RICKY CARMICHAEL CASEY JOHNSON NATHAN RAMSEY NICK WEY MARTY REID TIM FERRY KEVIN WINDHAM JOHN DOWD DOUG HENRY JEFF EMIG RYAN HUGHES range County Fairgrounds , osla Mesa, California esults: April 18, 1998 SCR: 1.
