Boone Motocross. The first race of the season
saw 375 riders attend, which was considerably
up from the 190 competing last year.
Craven shot off the gate for the early lead in
moto one as Pro-Long/Suspension Plus-backed
J.R. Carter pursued. Carter, riding his Supermini
machine, made gains through the tight stuff,
and Craven stretched the distance over Carter
on the straightaways. At the end of the first
moto, Craven stuck to the front spot, followed
by Carter. Motosports' ick Wolfe moved from
the fourth spot to third by the end of the moto.
The second moto saw Craven repeat as
Carter endured to take second. Wolfe had to
work hjs way up from a sixth-place start to
fourth as Bluegras Cycle Corral's Dusty Walker, who finished fourth in moto one, filed by in
third.
.
The first moto of the 125cc A class saw
Robert Goldson in the front spot, being chased
by Paul Karle, Daniel Nelson and Brad Strunk.
Strunk got by elson on lap one and went after
Karle, who reeled in Goldson by lap two. Meanwhile, Strunk picked off riders, in search of
Karle. Goldson took a spill around a sweeping
tum soon after and Karle jumped into the lead.
Karle took the win, followed by Strunk and then
elson. Goldson took a DNE
"When I passed Goldson, he went outside of
the rut and I went inside," Karle said. "Then I
took charge. I attribute my increased stamina to
being in much better shape now. I have been
training, with running and swimming."
.
Strunk took charge in moto two, with Karle
in second, followed by Podium One's Jason
Schmidt. Karle gave chase as Strunk had dialed
in the course, and the front duo pulled away
from their fellow competitors. Karle took the
lead from Strunk through the whoop section,
but his lead was short-lived as Strunk went back
to the front at the scoring tower on the start of
lap three. Strunk was pressured by Karle for the
remainder of the race because the overall was
now at stake. TI,e final lap saw Strunk pull away
on the last portion of the course as he filed by
for the win, with Karle second, Goldson third,
Adam Vaughn fourth and Schmidt in sixth.
Strunk took the overall win, followed by Karle,
Vaughn, Schmidt and elson.
Podium One/Cycle Shed's Larry Gessner
won the 250cc A class over Strunk with a 1-2,
and had a fine day by also winning the Over 25
and 30 A classes.

Kristian Blomdahl as the opening moto got
under way. As the pack disappeared, Dubin
picked himself up off the ground in last place.
'1 was going into the first turn a little hot,
and number three (Costanzo) came in and just
clipped my front wheel a little bit and I washed
out," Dubin said.
It didn't take Dubin long to get back up to
speed,'and by the end of the first lap be was up
into fifth and pushing Bradley in fourth. Bradley
and Blomdahl fell victim to the smoo.th-riding
Dubin on the following lap. Dubin dosed in on
Dunham, who had been passed by Costanzo for
the lead, and went underneath him at the end of
a long, choppy straight to take over second
place.
Costanzo's five-second lead was swallowed
up by Dubin in a single lap. Dubin sailed past
Costanzo on an uphill jump and would continue
on uncontested for the first·moto win.
"I thought maybe I'd be able to salvage a
third, maybe a second after that start," Dubin
said. "I just beared down and didn't let it mess
with my head and went to it."
Costanzo nailed the second"'\moto holeshot
but was passed by Dunham then Dubin on the
first lap. Dubin followed Dunham for a circuit of
the now-whooped-out track before railing
around him in a turn for the lead. Dubin then
easily roosted away with the win.
"I tried to get a better start and not fall in the
first turn," said the O'Neal/Shock
Thera.py/FMF-backed Dubin after ills I-I
sweep. 'The track got rough, but I guess I Iciild
of like it rougher. J really didn't get tired out
there."
The battle for second overall went the entire
distance, with Dunham holding off a determined Costanzo at the checkers. Bradley went 54 to edge out Blomdahl's 4-5 for fourth.
