Johnson unstoppable at
New Mexico Arenacross
By Ed Beckley
HOBBS. NM. MAR. 14
The Checkered Flag Productions Bardahl/Dunlop Arenacross Series visited New Mexico for
round 16, and Isaiah Johnson won everything he
entered with relative ease at the 'event, which
was held at the Lea County Cultural Center. Th~
center is a fairly new facility with a huge Roor,
and it was sold out for the first time ever in its
four-year history.
Series regulars Kenny Bartram and Jon Hedden both had trouble on the technical track, and
Hedden was injured in practice and was unable
to race.
The 125cc heat race started with the'F&S
Suzuki/FMF/Michelin-backed Bartram grabbing the holeshot, with Pro Circuit-sponsored
Johnson right behind. Bartram CiJme up short on
the finish line and severely jammed his wrist; he
retired to the pits, handing the victory to Johnson.
Johnson absconded with the holcshot in the
125cc mai,n and scored a wire-te-wire win. Bartram, after finishing the first lap in seventh
place, charged through riders throughout the
race' to eventualJy finish in third place, behind
Johnson and Oklahoma's Earl Kephart. Kaylon
Young and Jacob Gilsford rounded out the top
five.
The 250cc heat race was another wire-ta-wire
victory for Johnson, and he was, by far, the
fastest rider in the whoops. On several occasions, it looked as though he might lose it, but
he just stretched his lead and scored an uncontested victory.
The final race of the evening was the 250cc
Pro main and Johnson was, again, the quickest
rider into tum one. Bartram only made it 20 feet
before the rear brake locked up on his Suzuki,
leaving him on the sidelines for the remainder of
the race. Johnson then simply began to stretch
his lead, and he never looked back. Yamaha
rider Levi Ballog and Honda riders Steven
Birkelback and Kephart battled over second
until Ballog took clear control of that position
late in the race. Birkelback and Kephart look
third and fourth, respectively. Young put his
Honda into the fifth position when it was all
over.
The final event of the night was the jump
contest. All three riders involved elected to perform cross-uE,.s, but the partisan crowd chose
New Mexico native Johnson as the winner.
