In her first dirt bike competition,
Sarah Schilke not only finished but took
second in the Women's Combined
AlBIC class. She was excited and
exhausted at the finish line, claiming
tha t before the race she didn't know
w hat to expect or tha t it would be so
hard. "But it was so much fun," she
quickly added, "and I didn't realize how
satisfying it would be."
Schilke was one of the crowd's
favorite riders to watch. She had a Barbie doll dressed in matching riding gear
strapped to her back. The spectators
were pleased to see that Barbie, too, had
survived the race.
Coming into this event, the series
had two riders tied for first in the C
Senior class. Roger Thieling and Philip
Oliver both wanted to break that tie.
Thieling lost the bolts off his front-brake
caliper and had a slow first lap before.
pitting to make repairs. Oliver had a
good, fast ride and was the only one in
his class to complete five laps, taking
first. Thieling finished fifth, thus ending
the tie.
About 270 riders and a few hundred
pectators thoroughly enjoyed the first
weekend of spring, with temperatures
in the upper 60s, several great races, a
wonderful barbecue and the handing
out of awards and prizes.
The high point of the day was the
long-anticipated raffling off of a new

an; tency, patience and strategy
paid off for Patrick Garrahan, as he
and hi KTM cruised to take the
oVt'rall AlB and 250cc A-class honors at
the Ghostriders Me's Phantom Hare
Scrambles at Hollister Hills SVRA.
Garrahan credited his two-kick start
and good inside line for getting him into
third place during the first lap. He was
behi nd his brother Brian Garrahan and
Cole Mar hall for the first three laps.
"I saw they were battling each other,
going real fast. I just stuck' back from
them a little bit and hung out," Patrick
Garrahan said.
ear the end of the second lap, Marshall and Brian Garrahan pleased the
thrill-seeking crowd when they tangled
while going into a narrow corridor that
fed riders back onto the motocross track
and into the pit area. Brian Garrahan
did a header into the pits and reportedly
broke a clutch lever. Marshall emerged
upright and continued onto the MX
track.
Both Garrahans pitted after the third
lap. Patrick said that he passed Brian as
they left but, shortly after that, Brian
passed him back.
"Then he (Brian) broke, and then I
saw that Cole ran out of gas that lap, b
that was about it. I just crui ed the
whole way - and I came in first."
The break tha t ended the race for
Brian Garrahan happened on the fourth
lap. He had a derailed chain and discovered the master link was missing.
Marshall lost the lead on the fourth
lap, and he admitted, "T should've pitted on the third lap; I thought I could
make 40 miles and I didn't."
Marshall said he was thankful to "a
guy on the course already having problems tha t gave me gas - only a few guys
got by. I still came back to claim first in
the A Fou r-Stroke class and second
overall."
"Battling with Brian for the lead on
the first couple of laps," Marshall
answered when asked what was the
highlight of the day. "We were having a
good race, actually."
