, "1 had a two-kick start, but 1 still
came ouJ good and I was still in the top
10 at the end of the bomb; but about
four miles into it, my pipe broke in
two," said KX50D-mounted Jeff Capt. "1
rode the whole first loop with that and
the bike didn't run at all. 1 tried to hang
on, do the best 1 could and stay up with
everybody; then it-took us about 10 minutes to change the pipe when 1 came
into the pits."
Defending Vet-class champion Ed
McCoy had his work cut out for him
after he crashed in the first ditch on the
course, and quarter-liter hotshot Shane
Esposito combined a slow tart with a
few .mechanical glitches to create problems of his own.
"1 had a last-place start," said the
Yamaha YZ125 racer. "The bike
wouldn't start in gear, so I had to put it
back in neutral to get it started. Then 1
ripped off my shifter to where it was
just dangling. 1 couldn't shift it with my
foot - 1 had to reach undernea th and
grab it - but 1 still passed people, and 1
thought it was a real good course."
Brown was in the number-one spot
when he dashed out of loop one and
headed into the pits for gas. Davis was
just over a minute back in second, and
f,.bbott's KX500 dashed through in
third. Dave Opdas had his KX500 in
fourth.
"1 didn't get too good of a start. It
wa kind of dusty and it started raining
real bad, so my goggles got messed up,
but I think everybody had that problem," said Ondas.
Krause came in for a brake-pad
change in fifth overall, ahead of Oakley
Lehman, who was leading the 250cc
