housings and clutch lever, a 5creamin' Eagle coil, a chrome master-cylinder cover, chrome lower belt guard, chrome oil filter, chrome brake pedal and chrome head bolt caps. A braided plug wire kit, bearings and dust caps, and other small items came from HarleyDavidson of North Texas. Anything he forgot to order was frantically picked up from Orange County Harley-Davidson in Santa Ana. It is interesting to note that although he had his choice of any number of custom aftermarket supplies, Hain stuck mostly with so many H-D aftermarket items. ' "When you go to the beach, so many bikes now - like those Ultras and all them - are not Harleys," Hain says. "That's why I bought the thing in the first place. I w~nted a Harley-Davidson - not a Big Dog or some rip-off like thatand I wanted Harley parts on my Harley." Not that Hain didn't go to outside SOl!rces for select items. For instance, he consulted the Drag Specialties catalog and requisitioned some Ness Rail footpegs and shifter peg, Drag Special ties Bullet turn signals, a Badlands Turn Signal Load Equalizer II, Pingel Power-Flo fuel valve, NessTech Baby Moon gas caps, and chrome shifterlinkage ball joints. From the Nempco ca talog Hain purchased a Springer lowering kit, which consists of a set of billet rockers, to match the rear-end drop. A look through the Custom Chrome catalog yielded chrome swingarm frame covers, smooth chrome fender struts, a Young's chrome billet padlock holder, chrome Evo tappet block covers, a chrome knurled seat knob, a chrome oil pressure switch cover, a custom taillight and bracket assembly, turn-signal relocator brackets and a Speedline clutch cable adjuster cover. A Wild 1 chrome cone hupcap cover, Motion Pro braided-steel clutch and throttle cables and Goodridge USA stainless brake line, oil line and quick-disconnect fuel-tank crossover line kits complete the list of non-Harley add-on items. The whole works, including the engine, was to be fastened together using 'chrome hardware from Gardner-Wescott. Two final items that set the bike apart aren't as noticeable at first glance. The spokes are on the trick side in that they fea.ture four flatted surfaces around the circumference of each spoke, which really highlights the front wheel when the bike is in motion at night. The other cool hideou t piece is in the form of a polished stainless-steel splash guard in front of the rear wheel, hand-fabricated by Gunter. After five months - some of it spent waiting for the paint and chromework to be completed - Hain's Bad Boy was about ready to hit the street on its new front and rear Metzeler rolling stock, and was looking pretty resplendent in its PPG Candy Blue Sapphire urethane (a factory Harley color, no less) over a base coat of silvers, charcoals and blacks. What Long calls a "simple stripe job" somehow turned into a pretty active scheme, featuring eye-pleasing Jeff Long Graphics 319 North Britain Suite #107 Irving. "I like it," Hain says. "It's simple and really clean. I really didn't want a Springer front end - I like the Fat Boy better - but I think that the Springer is cool because it's pretty retro, and you just don't see as many of them running around. It's unique compared to the Fat Boy types that all my friends have. It's sleeker-looking." A few more mods are in the offing for the future, but for now, Hain is content to cruise the bike on weekends and to fabled Southern California hangouts such as the Rock Store and Cook's Corner. When you consider that he works at the beach, plays at the beach and now rides this sweet Bad Boy at the beach, it sounds like Hain may never find his way home again. n 61 0/458-9662 See your local motorcycle dealer Drag Specialties See your local motorcycle deeler Custom Chrome Inc, See your local motorcycle deeIw 'C,
