(nill~ VOICES Amenca's weekly motorcycle newspaper LffiERSTO THEEDfTOR Volume XXXV Sharon Oayton, President Michael Klinger, Publisher Show me the money Poovey fan You have a great newspaper and I read it religiously, especially the world trials coverage. I am curious as to why you don't list the salaries of some of the National- and World-level factory riders. All of the other sport figures, such as basketball, baseball and hockey players, list them. r think it would be nice to see that these professionals are equal to or at least close to some of them. It seems strange that everything is so hush-hush and about malting people believe that becoming, or striving to become, a top factory racer is not as lucrative as some might believe. Mkk D. Hutcheson Mdhutce@sccm.cc.ne.us Having just survived an eight-month battle against cancer, we came to Daytona the day after my last chemotherapy treatment. We made it out to most of the dirt tracks, always looking for Terry Poovey in the pits. With him being one of our favorite riders, we have spent years trying to pump him up at the races - making sure he knows he has our support. We didn't see Terry all week until Friday night at the short track. On Saturday night at the Grand National event, I asked him to get me another champagne bottle to go with the one he gave me last year. In the final, Terry came off the line in fourth and - because of the grooved track - that's where he stayed lap after lap. Then, not satisfied with fourth, Poovey took a chance and went up rugh. No one else thought they could run up there, but Terry took the chance and survived. He passed the two racers in front of him and finished second. When Terry came off the podium, he handed me his trophy and aid it was mine. We had both survived. Thanks, Terry, for all the memories, and know that you'll never be forgotten. Linda and Joe Oden Streetsboro, OH Unfortunately, those figures have never been made public and probably never will be. The day that one of the factories makes it public that they are paying rider X $3 million a year will be the day that rider X, that factory and motorcycle racing finnlly make it into the mainstream media. Now, we wouldn't want that, would we? .. Editor. Happy flagmen o In writing this, I want to publicly express my appreciation to all the officials at the AMA Supercross in the New Orleans Superdome on March 14. My club, the Louisiana Trailriders, was honored to be designated as flagmen at this race and I served as liaison between the club, the AMA and PACE Motorsports. This was a rewarding experience. PACE officials Todd Jendro, Mike Hathaway, Pat Schutte, and especially Robin were most helpful and courteous. Without exception, they overlooked my inexperience and helped us perform the duties assigned to us. AMA officials Duke Finch, Joe Safreed and Dee White, among numerous others, were extremely courteous, professional and helpful. In closing, I wish to express my a ppreciation to members of the Louisiana' Trailriders for the enthusiasm and professionalism displayed in the execution of these duties. Oh, yeah - way to go, Kevin Windham! Jonathan Kemp Roseland, LA Mori motors I just finished reading the Daytona issue, particularly the article "Mori Motors" (Issue #10, March 18). It is so refreshing to know of a racer who is supertalented and at the same time is so humble about his achievements and obvious talent. With Mori, there is no chest-beating and no pussball lame excuses as to why he didn't win. His typical response is: "Bike fast. Rider not." My son and I watched Mori practice at Oak Hill Raceway in Texas one day last month. We're both beginning racers (to a degree) and were amazed at how Mori looked. We wondered out loud to each other: "How can he be so good?" And he's a solid person to boot. My hat's off to you, Mori. Whether he's on a Honda RS, a Yamaha TZ, or a wheelbarrow, I will be in his corner. Mori, you are a rarity in the top ranks of road racers in the world. Gary Emerson Sugar Land, TX Playing games I read with interest the comments of AMA road race manager Ron Barrick regarding the disqualification of HyperCycle Suzuki's 750cc Supersport bikes at Daytona. at satisfied with merely stating the facts of the matter, and before the certain appeal process, the good Mr. Barrick says of HyperCycle "...yet they still continue to play games." I would ask Mr. Barrick if Honda was "playing games" when the fuel in Miguel DuHamel's 600cc Supersport bike was found to be illegal at Daytona this year? I would ask Mr. Barrick if Yamaha was "playing games" when, a couple of years ago, the Supersport bike being ridden by Tom Kipp was discovered to be nonhomologated? I would ask Mr. Barrick how he divines when someone maybe is breaking the rules and when someone is "playing garnes." Until Mr. Barrick's godlike qualities are better demonstrated, I would suggest he confine himself to the facts, saying less rather than more. If anyone believes that power does not corrupt, and that absolute power does not corrupt absolutely, I would urge them not to be at odds with those in charge of AMA Pro Racing. To be so is an eye-opening experience, with the rules being, and meaning, what the AMA dicta tes - the rulebook notwithstanding.
