By Kenneth King PEUON, SC, MAR. I he Sandlapper Enduro, round 11 of the SETRA Championship Enduro Series and the unofficial start of Daytona Bike Week, was a great race for KTM's Allen Gravitt. The MSRspon ored rider claimed his fourth overall win of the season by dropping one point Less than fellow KTM rider and defending SETRA Enduro Champion Franklin Ramey nI. Gravitt dropped 14 points on the course, with both riders matching scores all day. Gravitt was able to edge out Ramey by a point in one of the last sections of the day. "It W(l.S a great race and I ju t rode hard and had fun," Gravitt said about his race. Filling out the number-three position was Vet A rider Johnny McCoy on his Ray's Kawasaki-backed KX250 with a score of 20. He was also the High Point A winner. KTM-mounted Ron Scharphorn lost out to McCoy on tie breakers 'and nabbed fourth overall. 5charphom rode on a row with McCoy, and the two pushed each other all day. The Columbia Enduro Riders laid out a perfect course, perhaps the best this season, with almost 60 actual miles of trail. There were 16 checks and five sections that took points from the.AA and faster riders. The course offered a bit of everything for the racers: sand, tight woods, mud and fast open sections. The race started at the usual location, the Edisto Fire Department. The first section and check-in came at 4.8 miles, and close to seven miles of new trail lay ahead. Gravitt and Ramey both dropped five points in the tight, sandy section. "I almost got a four in the first section, but I came in the check with an OS," Ramey said. Gravitt came into the tiebreaker check with a 5:25, while McCoy dropped six points in the section. "I was having a great day - it was like I could do no wrong," McCoy said. T ,....., ...... ..... !-< P-. eat me. He rode great all day and deserved the win." "I barely made it to the check," Gravitt explained. '1 think [ came in on 00, so 1 made it by only a second or two." McCoy also went through with a one-point loss. This last one of the day would give McCoy problems. '1 got a vine caught around my neck and it took me off the bike," McCoy explained. "It was the only time 1 fell all day and it cost me a point at the last check." The rest of the race was on the faster side, and Ramey and Gravitt easily stayed on time. Skip Wyman and the rest of the Columbia Enduro Riders did an excellent job. The trails were great and scoring was fast and efficient; many' thanks to the Hollow Creek Fire Department for their help. l~ Sandlapper Enduro Pelion, South Carolina Results: March t, 1998 (Round 11) O/A; 1.
