race pitted top racers from divisions one
and two against each other, and Johnny
Marley seemed ready for the battle following rus victory over Sean Hamblin
and Mike Young in division one. But
when the gate dropped for the muddy
main event, it was Reed who pulled the
holeshot on his.FMF/LCS-backed KX.
Hamblin and McGavran gave chase.
McGavran looked fast on his Pro Grcuit/Fox/N Style-backed Yamaha and
shot by Hamblin at the top of the hill.
"My modified bike broke," said
Hamblin, "so 1 had to race my stock bike
in trus class."
"Sean was using the outside line and
earlier it was good, but in the final the.
inside was smoother:' McGavran said.
.
"I just had a better line."
McGavran did make up some time
during the next few laps, while Young
charged through the pack.
"Me and Marley got bad starts:' said
Young. "Then I saw him wash out and
crash, so 1 figured that 1 only needed to
get up to about sixth t6 score a top-three
overall."
In the end, Young had, in fact,.
worked up to sixth behind Ben Riddle,
Chad Johnson, Hamblin, McGavran and
newly ctowned champion Reed.
Minicycles represented the bulk of
the entries at Mosier, a trend wruch has
swept amateur Nationals like the G C.
Arguably the two most impressive
Minicycle racers of the week were Team
Yamaha's Jonathan Shimp and Team
Green/EMF-backed James Stewart. Both
Mini pilots swept their respective age
divisions with four-moto sweeps of both
the Stock and Modified classes.
Shimp proved to be quite the mud
expert, stealing the show when conditions worsened. By the end of each final,
Shimp had built up insurmountable
leads aboard his Thousand Oaks Yama-'
hal Answer Products-backed mini
Yamaha. Shimp topped fellow Californian Brian Hulsey and Texan Dusty
Fountain in the Stock division, and he
topped Team Green's Adam Mennenga
and Ryan Davis in the Modified class.
Stewart was equally impressive in
the younger division. He piloted his
EMF/Powervalve-backed KX80 to multiple holeshots and huge leads in each
race.
Arizona's Michael Blose waited unW
the last day to do his winning, but when
he did, he won big.
"I was sick all week long:' Blose said.
"[ didn't eat unW Sunday; then 1 started
to feel better."
Blose won the final in the 80cc (12-13)
division despite falling over once in the
mud. Blose put together a 4-1 ride for
the championship over Dylan Lord's 32, Gene Stull's 1-5 and Brian Gray's 5-3.
Team Green/R&D/Fox-backed Mike
Alessi made his debut in the 60cc (9-11)
Stock division a ,memorable one by topping the field. In the Modified division,
however, Alessi fell in the mud while
kading the second moto, and it ended
up costing him the title. Brian Johnson
took the lead and rus first-ever National
Championship with a 2-1 score, topping
fellow Floridian Kyle Chisholm's 3-2
and Alessi's 1-6.
Edward Herring was another firstlime National winner, topping all four
fuotos he entered aboard his
FMF / AXO-backed KX60. Herring
topped Jeff Alessi and Michael LaPaglia
in the Stock (6-8) division, and he beat
Florida's Ricky Renner and Michael
Pritchett, among others, in the Modified
division.
Kyle Keylon, son of former Honda
factory racer Kenny Keylon, found his
way into the winner's circle in both the
Stock and Modified Pee-Wee (7-8) divisions. Keylon, however, was consistently hounded in each moto by team
KTM/R&D Racing-backed Cole Seely,
who was celebrating rus eighth birthday.
Brandon Large found the going a bit
bumpy from time to time, but he hung
tough for third overall in the 7-8 Modified division.
Georgia's Bub.ba Crosby had a
peachy weekend after he scored two
class championsrups of his own in the
50cc (4-6) Stock and Modified divisions.
Crosby won three out of four motos for
the honor as top 4- to 6-year-old. Crosby
topped Trey Canard and Josh
Humphries in the Stock class, and he
finished ahead of Washington's
Cameron Smith and Humphries in the
Modified class.
