Vallejo jumped into the early lead but fell over in a turn, handing the lead to Bentley, Carmichael came around on the first lap in seventh and immediately began attempting both of the track's tricky triple jumps, This tactic was helping him make up time, but it also made onlookers cringe as he continually came up short very harshly, yet somehow saved it every time, Neese gated well and ran second, in front of Sellards, who cartwheeled in the whoops soon after, taking Lytle down witl!l him. With those two out, Carmichael' and Reynard assumed third and fourth and continued to climb, Carmichael wheelied by both Neese and Bentley in the whoops to take the lead by lap six, and Reynard followed suit a lap la ter to la tch on, to second. Carmichael continued to frighten the crowd as he attempted both triple jumps a few more times in order to increase his lead on Reynard a little each time. It worked, but it wasn't pretty. Once out front and comfortable, Carmichael calmed down and took the win with just over 17 seconds on Reynard. Meanwhile, Evans, who had been involved in the first-turn pileup, was charging through the pack from 15th on lap one to fifth by the halfway mark. On the last lap, Evans moved by Bentley to take the final podium position in ,third. Vallejo recovered from his early fall to claim fifth, ahead of Neese, Currie, Dement, a recovered Sellards, and Keeney in 1Oth, f~ Superdome New Orleans, Louisiana Results: March 14, 1998 (Round 5 of 8) 125 HEAT 1 (6 laps, 1-9 transfer to main): 1.
