Carmichael won the last-chance qualifier, although it took him until the last
laps to finally work up to first due to a
mediocre
start,
Honda
of
Jackson/Thor/Pro Circuit's Charles
Dunaway maintained second over
2Xtreme Performance lnternationalsponsored Jeff Dement, who led most of
the race, and Evans moved up to take
the last transfer in fourth,
MAIN
Povolny and Clowers wanted the
holeshot money and never let off into
the first corner, but it was Clowers getting the nod as the two riders then
careened over th~ 'other side of the track.
Vallejo jumped into the early lead but
fell over in a turn, handing the lead to
Bentley, Carmichael came around on the
first lap in seventh and immediately
began attempting both of the track's
tricky triple jumps, This tactic was helping him make up time, but it also made
onlookers cringe as he continually came
up short very harshly, yet somehow
saved it every time,
Neese gated well and ran second, in
front of Sellards, who cartwheeled in the
whoops soon after, taking Lytle down
witl!l him. With those two out,
Carmichael' and Reynard assumed third
and fourth and continued to climb,
Carmichael wheelied by both Neese and
Bentley in the whoops to take the lead
by lap six, and Reynard followed suit a
lap la ter to la tch on, to second.
Carmichael continued to frighten the
crowd as he attempted both triple jumps
a few more times in order to increase his
lead on Reynard a little each time. It
worked, but it wasn't pretty. Once out
front and comfortable, Carmichael
calmed down and took the win with just
over 17 seconds on Reynard.
Meanwhile, Evans, who had been
involved in the first-turn pileup, was
charging through the pack from 15th on
lap one to fifth by the halfway mark. On
the last lap, Evans moved by Bentley to
take the final podium position in ,third.
Vallejo recovered from his early fall to
claim fifth, ahead of Neese, Currie,
Dement, a recovered Sellards, and
Keeney in 1Oth,
