He ga ined a few more spo ts on the second lap, then took the lead on the third wit h a strong dri ve off the West Banking and do wn the back straight. "I d idn 't want to finish that race, bu t I got blocked in on the lap before and I wan ted to get in a rea lly good , cle a n lap," Jam es said . " I ' rn goi ng to forfeit my position in that race. After notching a sec- . ond to Grea ves in the Expert CT-1, Luke wo n th e Exp ert Mi dd leweig h t Spor t Bik e r a ce in a sq u ea ke r ove r Bri a n Livengood , a lso Suzuki-mo u nted, and Hon da-mo unted David Gou ld. The trio had hooked u p for the final three laps, wit h Luke using the d raft from the chicane to take the wi n. The wi nning margin was .178 of a second . "What a fini sh - it was incredible," Lu ke sa id , add ing, "I w as mea su ring everybody up on tha t last lap and I saw my chance and I jus t wen t for it. I ended up just edgi ng the other gu ys ou t." It wasn 't Luk e' s fi r s t w in o f th e week end, howev er. That came in Friday' s Exper t Middleweigh t Su perb ike race, in which he initially emerged victorious in a furious three-ma n ru sh from th e chica ne to th e flag . Bu t Lu ke wa s pen alized one la p for jumping the sta rt and the w in we nt to Richard Alexander [ r., ove r Pengui n Roadracing Sch oo l' s Eric Wood . . . Alexan der' s other win cam e halfway into Saturd ay' s program in the Exp ert Heavyweight Spo rt Bike. Tha t w a s when Gainey Jr. took over, already wi th a commandi ng mar-' gi n, w hich he stretched to 14.906 seconds by the fini sh. Jason Palm er, also Honda-mounted , was second . "My hand went nu mb," Ga in ey Jr . said . "Thirty minu tes is a long time. I' m jus t glad it's over ." Two races la ter, Gaine y Jr . h a d ano the r ha lf-hour race a nd th is ti me , riding the same Honda 600, he came ou t second to Su zuki GSXR750-mounted Josep h Ca p elli in th e Ama teur GT-1 after leading for the first five laps. After that he was in a seru m with a handful of other bikes whil e first Mar io Mar tin and then Capelli took th e lead. Gainey Jr . wa s well off the pa ce, d ropping back to fourth before makin g hi s push in the final third of the race . On the 11th lap he wen t fro m fourth to second , w he re he finis hed, 2.32 seco nds beh ind Capelli. Conicelli go t the better of Gainey Jr. a second time on Frid ay and by nearl y an identic a l ma rgin . In the five-lap Amateur Middleweight Superbike race, Con icelli led Ga iney fro m the drop of th e green to the checkered flag, beating him by 2.321 seconds . "I need ed one more lap, " Gainey Jr. said. "Tha t' s it. Both of us had a grea t ra ce. It ' s a long da y . We 'll ge t h im tomorrow." Gainey Jr. didn't get Con icelli on Saturday, but only because he wasn't in the Amateur He avyw eight Spo rt Bike race. Aga in using his Hon da 600, Gainey Jr. had so me catching u p to d o wit h David Dalzell, who go t ou t in front on the second lap aboard his Suzuki GSXR750. On the third lap Dalzell wen t wide in turn o ne a nd Ga iney Jr . w ent u p the ins id e and began to ed ge a way on the next lap before speed ing to an 11.996seco nd wi n. "I w ant to thank every one a t KWS Mot orspo rts for all the help they ga ve me this weekend ," Gainey Jr. said. "On Wednesd ay we were in p ieces and here we are back tod ay, wi nni ng a race." Martin led the first lap, w ith ConicelIi tak in g the second go ing into one as the pair pulled away from third place. Conicelli held the spot until the last lap , when Mar tin shot by on the short in field chute befor e the left-hand dogleg. Martin took the lead int o the chican e, with Conicelli on his tail - hid ing there until th e ver y last momen t, when he pu lled out of the d raft approaching the fini sh line to win by a scant .020 of a second .
