Be CANADA,JAN. 17 , Brett Devries was the big winne r a t rou nd one of t he 1998 Canad ian Nation a l Arenac ross Cha mpionship Series. Fonner Nationa l Champion DeVr ies cap tu red both the 125 and 250cc Expert main events and too k hom e more tha n 51200 in p rize money. In 125cc qualifying , Devries won the firs t heat with little competition from the rest of the pac k. Loca l Ve t rid er John Verd onk h ad h is Suz uki flying out of the ga te in hea t two and held on for the win over the hard-charging Darrel Martens. Kawasaki-mounted Lee Coutts won the fast-paced last-cha nce qualifier. As the gate dropped for the sta rt of the 125cc Ex pe r t ma in , i l w as DeVries grabbing th e holeshot, w hi le Martens s tu ffed hi s Ho nda under Darcy Lange in the first tu m for second. Un lucky Sha w n McDou gall took a heavy spill off of the larg e tabletop jump, taking himse lf out of the action. Martens fell on the second lap , allowing Lange , Cout ts and Verdonk to motor by. Martens was soon up and going again, and started to pu t pressu re on the lead group . By the ha lfway point of the IS-lap main , DeVries was long gone and cruising to the win , while Lange held on to second pla ce and Martens worked his way back up to th ird. Coulls looked to have fourth p lace sewn up un til his bike seized nea r the end . In the 250cc class, DeVries and Martens too k both quali fiers while Stan Sloboda too k the lastchance qualifier . As the lo-rid er pack head ed around the first tum in the main event , Sloboda was at the head of the pack, dosely Iollowed by Reagan Sieg, Martens, DeVries and Shawn Galbrai th. Slo boda was riding a grea t race at the fro nt of the field, while Devries seemed to be content to circulate in fourth place for the firs t few laps, hoping something woul d happen up fron t. Something did happen up front - Martens crashed again, this time into the back of Sieg's Yamaha over a double jump. Martens quickly remounted to join the race. Once Mart ens was out of the way, DeVries bega n dosing in on Sieg. Sloboda continued to lead , although he was visibly slowing do wn, especia lly th rough the whoops. DeVries blasted past Sieg and turned up the pace to move up to challenge Sloboda for the lead . Sloboda made a mistake in the whoops and DeVries was dose enough to take the lead without an y retaliation from Sloboda. DeVries quickly p ut so me distance on the res t of the pack and held on lor the win over Martens, who had made huge gains 10 get up to second place.
