McGrath had a flaw less night, grabbing the holeshot in both his hea t and the main eve nt in similar fashion before trouncin g away to commanding vic tories at the PACE MotorSports-promoted event. The win ma rked McGrath's 47th Su percross victory and his 63rd win includi ng National MX victories - w hich m.oved him into a tie wiSh the legend ar y Rick Joh nson a nd Bob Hannah on th e all- time win list. For McGrath, it was a night to remember , for his team and for himself - and it wen t a long way toward increasing his confidence. "I'm riding reall y good right now and there's no reason I can't keep winning like that, " McGrath said . "I feel great right now. I'm super-excited about Jimmy's second-place finish, and it couldn't be better for the team. My confidence is as high as it has ever been in my life. Everything is working excellent and I feel the same as I did in '96. I come out here knowing I can win. That's the difference between this year and last." After coming so close to accomplishing this fea t last weekend, Bullon was determined in San Diego. McGrath's teammate didn' t have the early success the four-time SX champ enjoyed, but won his semi to advance into the main. After another mediocre start in the main, Butto n climbed the ladder to take over second with a brilliant pass on both Kevin Wind ham an d Dou g Hen ry in the whoops on lap nine.
