'This gave Yamaha rider Gerald Greene the open door to lead the pack around the mountainous and very greasy terr ain. No stra ng er to the series, Terry Cun. ningham on his new Gas Gas followed in hot pursuit. On lap tw o, G reene fe ll off what was becoming a very fast pace. Hess then p ut his Mark IV/Valley Kawasaki/Neeley Raci ngsponso red KX250 int o the lead and began setting a pace that only Cunningham could ma tch, Meanwhile, Leonard had remounted after his fir st -t ur n crash and wa s slicing through th e pack, attempting to get within striking distance of the leader s . Hess and Cunningham wer e maneuvering through the lapped riders, keeping each oth er in sight, each hoping the oth er would make a mi stake on which they could capitalize, By midway, Lester Par tlow had moved his Kawasaki in to fourth overall and Green, who had slipped to fifth, was having pr ob lems getting by slower riders ~ some of the tigh ter section s. Next in line was Ov er 35 rid er Jimmy Pratt , pushing his Kawasaki to the limit to stay ahe ad of Hond a fou r-s troke rider Ty Shipley, who was making it look easy on the slick hillsides. Back in the scoring are a, spec ta to rs were watchi ng closely as ti m e w as running out, wondering w ho would emerge in the cleari ng be low as the leader. Would it still be Hess, who had been steady on lap times since tak ing the lead on lap two, or C unningham, who was waiting until the last lap to make his charge to the front? Both Hess and Cunningham up ped the pace on the nex t-to- the-Iast lap and were only seconds apart coming through scoring for the last lap . After two ho urs of racing, Hess crossed the finish line just secon ds ahead of Cunningham. The last lap proved to be both of the ride rs' fas test lap times, with the thi rd-place rid er, Leonard, a ful130 seconds behind.
