eMC Golden State Nationals South, Round 3 Casey Lytle kept rolling by winning the 125cc Pro class at the third round of the CMC SunStar Golden State Nationals South. The crew a t LAC R work ed overtim e pr eparing for the near ly 900 riders wh o attend ed the event. "We bu ilt three tracks for this weekend," Jack Barbacovi said. "We have the J.B. Memorial, the Saddle Glen and the Pee Wee cours e." The concep t, though a little confusing a t tim es, w as an aid for pumping up la ps .v most races were up to 20 min as utes in length . As expec ted , the 125cc Pro race was the d ay' s prem ier eve nt, wit h top lo ca l g u ns Ly tle a nd Billy Payne facing off against off-road racing gia nt Rodney Smith and Germ an 2S0cc Grand Prix compe tito r Pit Beirer. The firs t mot o sa w a sho wdow n between Lytle and Payn e. The tw o future champs battled for the first half of the race, with Pa y ne an d his Pro Ci rcuit Kawasaki lead ing the way. Just after the midway point in the race, Payne mad e a mistake. "1 saw him sli de o u t u nd er th e brid ge," Lytle said. Lytl e assu m ed the lead a nd never looked back, pulling away with au thority for the eventual win. Payne rem ounted to sa lvage th e runne r-u p spo t, followed 'by Michel Constanti nou, Jere my Chau sse and Donovan Mitchell. Rooki e Pro Chris Gosselaa r turned head s by pu lling the holeshot and lead in g th e fi rs t half of th e seco nd mo to. Gosselaa r, wh o was rid ing in only his second Pro race, seemed a bit nerv ous and overextend ed bu t still showed some serious speed . After the midway point, Go sse laa r m ad e so me m ist a kes a nd dropped back, w hil e Lytl e a nd Payn e moved into first and second , respective- H 24 Iy. Beirer began to cha rge a nd mov ed into third as Con stantinou and Keith Johnson filled in the top five spots. In the end, Lytle went on to post the win , whil e Payne secu red second in front of Beirer . Wh at a bo u t ea rly race leader Gosselaar? He fin ish ed six th, beh ind Johnson and Constantinou, and was still within sight of the day's top Pros. Doug Dubach and his YZ400F had a bann e r d a y, w in n in g three se pa ra te classes. Dubach topped the 2S0cc, SOOcc and Over 30 Pro classes. "1 wan t to r ace m y YZ400 a t th e Atlanta Sup ercross," Dubach said. "Th is bike was built by White Brothers, an d Enzo did the suspension. It pulled every holeshot except for one toda y." Dubach chased a fter Bei rer in the first 2S0cc Pro moto. "1 got stuck behin d Spud Walters for a little while in the first moto, and 1 kind of lo st to u ch w it h Pit," Du bach explained. Beirer wen t o n fo r the Ino to win, wit h Dubach not far behind at the finish. The second mo to saw ma ny.of the racers slam the starting gate, breaking it off its rails. Th is time Dubach was ou t front while Beirer was mired deep in the pack. "1 saw hi m hit the ga te: Du ba ch sai d . "It's too bad, because 1 felt p repar ed to race him in th e seco nd moto bu t 1never had the chance." Duba ch simply wa lked away for the moto and overall win , followed by Walters on his Mark Moore-tuned Yamaha and Team TRE-backed Billy Joe Mercier. Mich ael Youn g scor ed the overa ll victory for the second straight week in the 125cc Intermediate class. Young and Brya n McGa v ran each scored wi ns in their respective qu alifyin g races and lined up next to one another for the allor-nothing main eve nt. When the gate dropped, McGavran and Young jumped ou t in front o f the field , w it h Chri s Neitzel follow ing in third. By the start of the seco nd lap, it was evident th at it wo ul d be a tw o- m an race bet w een McGavr an and Young. Young dogged McGa vr an in every turn and off ea ch jump until he cracked. " I ca me a r o u n d this turn and McGa vr an was just gelling up," said ru nn er-up Chris Neitzel. "I guess he took a little time to get it back together. " With McGavran ou t of th e picture, You ng sty led to a convincing victo ry and celebrated during the final lap by performing eye-wideni ng whips over the most difficult jumps. Ne it z el rod e a g rea t race on hi s PVK / O' Neal /Riders' Choice-backed Kaw asaki , w hile McGavran regrouped to salvage third in front of 2S0cc Intermediate winne r Lann y Turner and Pro Grip-backed Oscar Valdez. Team Suzu ki/FMF mini ace Shan e Bess was a doubl e class winner despite very adverse circumstances . Momen ts before the start of his first 80cc (12-13) race, Bess did some warmup laps in the jetting area and was involved in a collision w ith another racer. Severe damage was done to his cycle, and he was forced to ride it as it was. Bess foug ht his way fro m well outside the top 10 to secu re second behind Arizona's Michael Blose in the first mota. The second mota saw Blose ou t front aga in, w ith Bess a close second . Bess, who only a d ay before had suffered a concussion in a cra sh d u ring practice, seeme d a little slower th an Blose, but Blose we nt d ow n o n th ree di ffe rent occasions in the race and finished a d isap pointing sixth. Bess went on for the moto and overall win, followed by Team Green racers Dylan Lord and Daton Beavers. Bess returned to do battle with Team Thousand O ak s Yam a ha-backe d Jona than Shimp in the Supermini class. Shi m p won the first m oto d espite racing in extreme pain. "I broke my foot in pr actice yester- . day, " Shimp said . "We have it taped u p. 1 have to use all ou tside lines so 1 d on't use the rear brake." Shimp topped Bess, Ross Garcia an d har d-charging Billy Lani no vic h in the opening moto, The seco nd mot o sa w Sh im p a nd Bess batt le aga in . The tw o rid e r s exchanged the lead several times duri ng the race, but Bess prevailed when Shimp fell off after washing out the fron t end. La n in o vi ch in he r ited the runner-up posit ion, fo ll owed by Tea m Gree n's Sean Collier, European racer Sebas tian Sanchez, and Shimp .
