Charles and Sharon Clayton , the founders of
America 's weekly motorcycle newspaper, Cycle News,
established this foundation in 1989 after they realized
the need to financially help motorcycle racers who
have unfortunately been injured during a race. Their
wish has been to give back to the motorcycle industry,
what the industry has given to them.

By Dick Goodwin
LASVEGAS,NV,JAN. l1
Local hotshoe Mark Herm ann dropped the hammer on his competi tion in the 125cc Novice divisio n as he outclassed and outlasted all the oth er

1998, held al Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Hermann bla sted his Red Carpet Kawa saki

Meshkoff and j aso n Brown . As the pack
careened ar ound the trac k, leading Beginner
racer Brown made his move into second overall.
Hermann was on fire, how ever, and just flamed
away from everyone else to win by a stou t mar gin . Brown coasted to an easy seco nd, ahead of
john Meshkoff and David Munoz.
Munoz's first race must have insp ired him.as
he led everyo ne at the start of race two. Hermann
wasn't to be d enied on this da y, how ever, as he
passed jason Brown and then Mun oz for the lead.
Once ou t in front, Hermann turned up the wick
and ran away and hid as he had done in the first
race. Brown foug ht pas t Munoz for seco nd but
Hermann was long gone. Muno z finished second
ove rall, with Meshkoff and jason Derschan in
third and fou rt h. respectively. Brown wa s the

Kevin Steele, the flyin ' fireman. jumped out
in front in the first Vet mo te, just ahead of Brad
Simcox and Ron Goodwin. Mall Hennann and
Glenn Weidman were also on the mov e. As the
pack raged around the track, Simcox took over
first place and Rich Stuc ki roared into contention on his Honda. Simcox kep t the throttle
cranked up and flash ed to the win. Stucki sur.
vived a nasty dogfight wi th Weidman to captu re
seco nd, and Herma nn brough t home fo urthplace honors.
Simco x got right down to business in the second cont est, posting the fast est time to the first
tu m . A few turns lat er, Kevi n Steele b lasted
righ t past him. On ce aga in , Stucki w or ked his
wa y up to argue with Weidman over third. Simcox p urs ued Steele wi th a vengeance, but Simcox wasn 't giving any gro und this time. The two
raced spo ke to spoke for the w ho le race, with
Steele emerging as the winner of race two. Simcox took the overall win due to his better firstmo to result. Weidm an and Stucki finished second a n d t hird ove rall, res p ect i v ely , while
