28 TURLOCK, CA, JAN. 25 . - ith the Super Bowl d ominating t he te le vi si on sc re e n, Tyler Evans took the op portunity to d ominate the 125cc Pro cla ss as th e Salinas resid ent p ut on a su per ride to take the win at the second round o f th e GFI Ca li fo rn ia Win ter Motocro ss Series North. The five -r ace se r ies, w hic h wa s p lagu ed b y tw o straight wee kend s of race-canceling bad weather, finally got back und er way and the AMP-op er a te d Oatfield Racewa y was once agai n the place to be as more tha n 260 ride rs left their televisions at home and op ted for some motocross fun. Evans, wi th a middle ga te position, challenged the 12-rider field to the first turn, but it was Trevor Meagh er w ho took the ho leshot. Right on Meagher ' s tail was Rick Ryan , but not for long, as he and his Su zu ki went down. As the pack cleared the firs t turn, the running o r d e r w as Mea gh er, Dan Pa la d ino aboard a Yamaha , Evans, Jeff Northrop and Na than Woo ds . Meagher s howe d good speed as he held off the charge of Evans and Paladin o for the firs t few laps . With a singl e 15-minu te-plus-tw olap mo to, good speed and excellent conditioni ng wo uld be key factor s as the laps wo re on. On lap fou r, Eva ns finally reeled in a nd passed Mea g her on th e back stra ightawa y. How ever, Meagher would ha ve none of that , an d he immed iately re took the lead on the exit of the following turn. Eva ns co ntin ued to follow closely and, on a hairp in turn, made an amazing outsid e / insid e mo ve that left Meag he r hel ple ss as he w a tch ed th e Suz u ki rider vanish over the doubles. "I to o k a nd sq ua re d off the tur n before the dou ble section and jus t blew by him," Evans later commented . Me anwh il e, Ka w asa ki-mo u n ted Northrop, who had just recentl y turned Pro, passed Paladino for third and wa s quickly gaining on Meagher. As the two made their way throu gh the whoop section, Northrop looked like a seasoned ve teran as he tract ored his Kawasaki through the rockers and came ou t in second place. U p fro n t, Eva ns h ad checke d o u t wi th a blistering pace and opened up a 10-second lead over No rthrop . However, behind No rthrop, a battle for third was be g inning to d e velop as a fas tcharg ing Wood s joined Meagh er a nd Paladi no. Wood s firs t passed Paladino over a tough uphill d ouble for fou rth and the n quickly passed Meagh er for third . Meagher must hav e had flashbacks of -how Evans had blown by him earlier in the race, because he promptly repassed Wood s over th e bi g step- u p jump to regain th ird. Wood s took the repass per sonally, and he once ag ai n hunted d own Meagher and passed him over th e specta to r d ou bl e. Th is tim e, Woods made it stick as he slow ly putted away from Meagher and Paladino. Things appea red stable as the end of the race neared . However, Ryan , who ha d gone d own a t the start of the race, had silently mad e his way through the field and, as the w hite flag came ou t, 50 STK BEG (7-8): L Ryan Marti n (KTM); 2.
