Weyand Payne scored a 1-2 punch to knock ou t the competition. The first 125cc Pro race saw Pay ne in the lead fro m the drop of the ga te, wi th Hond a of Troy's Casey Lytle an d Michigan 's Wey in tow . Th ese th ree rid er s separated themse lves from the pack and se t th e s tage for a n a w es ome battle , w h ic h ra ged fo r the fir st h a lf of th e mot a . Ly tle was th e first to ma ke hi s move by passin g Payne for the lead . "I had bad lines in the beginn ing of the race," Payne sa id. "Actu ally, he (Payne) had better lines than me :' Lytle di sagreed . "I hop p ed int o his lines during the firs t few laps because mi n e were not as good as his; then I was able to keep the pressure on and make a pa ss." IT A few mo me n ts later, Payne lost second to Wey, wh o had more speed in the rocker s. " I jus t wa s n ' t co mfo r ta ble in the rockers ," Payne said . . Payne fell off the pace and held on to third , w h ile b oth We yand Lytl e mot ored a way for fi rs t a n d seco n d , respectively. Th e secon d moto saw Payne o nce again in control, with We y a close second . First-mo ta w in ne r Lyt le flipped ove r th e bars ea r ly i n the r a ce a n d would be forced to come from last. Meanwhile, up front, Payne began to pull aw ay, but just w he n it looked like Pa yn e wo u ld b e a run a w ay wi n ne r, things came apart for him with two laps to go. "1 go t stuck behind a lapper and lost my m omen tum," Pa yne sa id. "Th en, after that, 1 just got scr ew ed up in the head ." Wey closed in qui ckl y and then, on the last lap , he made his move on Payne. "I knew Billy was having tro uble in the rockers," Wey said . "I knew I could get by him there." Wey made the pass and then roosted away for the mot o and overall victory. Payne took second, ahead of Donovan Mitchell, Jerry Aleman and Keith Johnso n. Nic Wey (67) bested the 125cc Pro class, while Doug Dubach (8) took the measure of the 250cc Pro class at the second round of the CMC/Sunstar . Lytle came back and salvaged ninth d espite riding with a badl y bent set of handlebars and a bru ised bod y. Michael Young cam e out on top after a close race wi th Team Yamaha's Bryan McGavran in the hig h ly co m peti tive 125cc Interm ediate div ision. Young and Team G reen's R.J. Th ompson had a n awesome battle in thei r qua lifier, with You ng coming out on top. "R.J. took the holeshot, but I had better lines than him," Young said..of their qualify in g battl e . "Aft er that , h e got tired and got squirrelly in the back secti on . I took a dvan tage o f t ha t and jumped by him. " Young wen t on to post th e victo ry and would get first pick on the starting line for the "all or nothing" main eve n t. Young see med up to th e cha lle nge a nd p ull ed the h oles h ot at th e s tart. Young's lead w as cu t short by Bryan McGavran, who made a quick pass in the rockers. " H e go t b y m e in the wh o ops," You ng said . "I went d own th e mid d le a n d he went on the insid e - it w a s a faster line." McGavran began to pull away on the first few lap s, while Se an Hamblin moved into third . Young got his secon d win d late in the race and began to pull away from Hamblin and close ground on McGavran. Durin g th e last few la p s, Youn g became a factor in the race for the win . "1 just kept telling myself 1 could do this," Young said. Young caug ht, pressured and passed McGavran for the lead bu t almost fou nd himself on the ground two turns later. "After 1 passed him, he stuffed me and go t me back," Young said . On the white-flag lap, Young set up McGavran and execu ted the pass which would ultimately win the race. "It really felt great to see my dad with his ha nds ra ised - he was rea lly happy," Young sai d of his win. Co le Seely and Don Kearne y con tinued to re ig n in th e 50cc division af te r sweeping all four mot os for the second week straight. Seely topped Chad Gores and Buddie Bru ner, w hile Kearney took the measu re of Alan Jiron, Marcus Ca rillo, Richard Sterling an d Kyle Sm ith. Br ian Manley was king of th e Vet classes a fte r pos ting v icto ries in two se pa rate classes - the Over 25 and the Over 30 Pro d ivisions. Man ley also competed in the 500cc Pro class and finished seco nd to Dou g Dubach.
