Spencer is king of Barn Burner Short Track By Mykeal Clark SAN JOSE, CA JAN. 10 , Rod Spen cer won the las t main event of the 1997 Barn Burner Se ries to win th e ch a m p io ns hi p points battle and ea rn the $1000 prize for his efforts aboa rd the Rod Lake /Bud Martin Honda at the San Jose Fairgrounds. Spe ncer won thr ee ma ins and was seco nd twic e, ou tscoring secondplaced finisher Mik e Kun sman on the Kunsman Brothe rs Honda; th ird in points was po p ular veteran Paul Iwanaga . As the season ends , some spec tacula r performances should be not ed , beginnin g with Sean Jon es, wh o rod e his KTM to a pe rfec t six win s ou t of six mai ns in the Pee Wee Jun ior class - the onl y racer to do so! We a ll know that it takes a lot of help to put on a race series, and with 80 to 100 riders at each eve nt, many peopl e gave their all to pu t on the best indoo r short track series in this area . O r EN TW EX: 1. c;...nl· Boerc (Tri). u sey O'Conner aces Las Vegas MX By Dick Goo dwin LAS VEGAS, NY, DEC.21 Jason O'Con nor sto pped the com pe tition in its tracks by winning the 125cc Beginner class with a 1-2 tall y at a Las Vegas Motorcycle Clu b event held a t the Las Vegas Motor Speed way . O 'Connor led a sea of red .throug h the firs t turn, with the Hondas of Alex Slocu m a nd Tim Pars on right on his heels . Gordon McKenna a nd Jason Brown were both on the charge as places shu ffled during th e first lap . O'Connor maintained h is lead, but McKenna had moved up and was wailing in his wake. Brown moved. into third and was keeping an eye on the lead duo. O'Connor kep t the heat on and wa s able to hold off McKenna for the win. Brow n, Slocum an d Cody Gower filled out the nex t three spots. Brown blasted int o the lead to start race two , just ah ead of Mark Stowe and McKenna, while O 'Connor was fra n t ica ll y clawing hi s way throu gh th e fie ld . By th e end o f th e fir st lap, McK enna had wrested t he lead awa y from Brown, and O'Connor had climbed all the way to third . McKenna bobbled, recovering in fo urth, as Brown set sail for the finis h line. Brown was lighting it u p but O'Conno r knl'W he was safe in secon d for th e overa ll victory. Seth Randall su rge d up to g ive O'Connor some anx ious mom ents but, a t the finish, it was Brown wi th the win a nd O'Connor in se cond. Brown ca ptured sec o nd o ve ra ll for his e fforts , with St. Geo rge, Utah's McKenna third. . In the Pee Wee (7-8) class, Darin Anderson nabbed th e ho leshot, lead ing Ha r riso n, Tony Ca pu to and Ronnie Goodwin thro ugh the first few corne rs. Anderson held off Harrison fo r most of the first lap until Harrison was able to figh t his way pa st for the lead . From there, Harrison stayed on th e gas and raced to th e wi n, ahead of Anderso n. Caputo and Goodwin fin ished third and fourth, respecti vely, but first and second in their 4- to 6-year-old age group.
