Schultz, wh o ha d run as qu ickly as 7.336 during the event, cu t a stout .407 light in the final, but his 7.489 wa s outpaced by See ling's 7.273. Pau l Ca st, who lost to See ling in the se mifinals, will lake home the number-one plate for 1997. In the s po rtbi ke classe s, Kawasa ki's Rickey Cadson took a double wi n, scoring victories in both 750cc Pro Superbike and the Met z e le r 600cc S u p e rS p o r t classes. Ca dso n also secu red the n um ber-one plate in the 750cc class. Buddy Forbus looked to defend his number-one 750cc plat e in the early ru nning, qua lifying number o ne at 9.440 seco nds. Forbus used the run as a backup for the record, running a 9.430 in the fi rs t ro u n d o f elimi n a tio ns, but h is cha m p io nsh i p hopes w ere das hed a ro u nd lat er whe n he wa s put on th e trai ler by David Mayo, 9.60 to 9.63. Gadson took his fifth 750cc win of the year, runni ng a 9.72 in the fina l to Mayo's 9.77 effort. The 600cc SuperSports we re flyi ng at Gainesville, with a handf ul of 10.20 numbers being recorded. Dennis recorded a 10.26 in the thi rd roun d agai nst Mike Sweeney but was di squalified when he came up light on the scales. He got the ho leshot against Ca dso n in th is year's final, but slo we d o n th e to p end, w here Ca dson rod e arou nd him for a 10.41 to 10.60 w in - his third 600 cc event wi n of the seaso n. Erni e Velasco, who lost in rou nd two to T ra ci Farr, took home the number-one plate in the SuperSport class.
