it always ra ins. With a year ly rainfall of ~a r ly
40 inc hes, it's si m p ly f'xpec ted a t the October
eve n t, which is run in th e sha dow of Mount
Baker. This year's cou rse was nt"arly 70 miles in
le nKth, a n d s eem ed leisu re ly e n o ugh w i t h
almost all the first half run at 15 mil es per ho ur .
Both em ergency chec ks took points fro m everyone, wi th Odom and Furrenes reng on the bottom half of their mi nutc at the first .

sta r t area , w it h the checke rs s ta nd ing in the

In secnons three and fou r, ride rs received
most lv ze roes also, b ut B a nd C riders had no
time t~ o;pa re. Section five was th e second cmcrgeney test. Miles of root- filled hillsides characte rized thi s te-st. Trails included the Unknown
Trail. Lowe r Ha rty Crack Up, McN utt and The
Logger's Slacks .
Two more sections bro ug ht them back to the
gas stop, where the sho rt-course riders turn ed in
their car ds . Chairma n Lyle Duronso had warned
them tha t loop three ran fro m the pit, at an eleval ion of about 400 feet, to t he to p of Sli d e
Mountain , which rises to over 4100 feet. The riders lef t for th e mo u n tain vi a Gloomy Gu lch,
Joe's Bridge, Elk Trail an d Honda Hill. As they
rou nd ed th e m oun tain a nd s ta r ted. along a 2m ile rid ge, th ey had to con te nd with how ling
wind . Th e pr e-rid er sa id they were go ing to pu t
up a sign that read , "Ca u tion: High Wind s" ~ but
it blew aw ay!
Following the- rid ge was Jo hn' s Hi ghway,
whic h is named after lSDE rid er John Nielsen.
This year the trail was a l-mile d ownhill at 3
mph . This ga ve mo st of the rid ers tim e to bull dog their bikes if the y nee ded to a nd s till be
close to ke y time. The fina l secti on incl uded
Miller Road Tra il, Anot her Trail, and a repe at o f
Slick Ribs . Thi s brought the ride rs back to the
finish.
